I tried 2 sacrifice material but many times it doesn't work out. Can you guys please explain what are things you consider before sacrifice of material?? Perhaps if you could post ur game along with comments like what was ur thought process and why you think its good time 2 sacrifice??

Sometimes i think something along the lines of hmmm...I wonder what piece of my opponent is on a really good square and then I take it not worrying about losing material in the process of taking it.

Kinda a way of eliminating your opponents best player.

P.S......Disclaimer I am not advocating shanking anyone in your next basketball game in order to get rid of the opponents best player.

I mean do you consider all d forced lines....n how far do you see....may b 8 moves or 10 moves??

I don`t think all that calculating stuff too much I just kinda think like a human in generalities.

I simply go by spider sense kinda like if I look at my opponents piece and my spider sense tingles a lot then I am willing to sacrifice a bit to get rid of it.

If I look at my opponents piece and my spider sense only tingles a little bit then I would be willing to sacrifice a bit less material than if it was tingling a lot.

Its kinda like all those threads that debate whether a bishop or knight is stronger.

It depends on the position sometimes such and such a piece is super great or super terrible and it needs not be a bishop or knight it could be any piece.

If you see a piece for either side that looks either super good or super bad then try to do something about that piece.

Avatar of Dale

So if you have a terrible piece try to sacrifice that terrible piece and if your opponent has a terrible piece make sure you do not take it.

This is d game I played yesterday wherein I consider Bishop sac...but couldn't see much deep so immediately get into bad position n almost losing. ....but accidentally won on time....

Here is d link.....http://www.chess.com/livechess/game?id=666832577

When you won did you think oops?Cool

I wouldn't have considered queen sac unless there's some serious compensation like mate...but here in dis game queen has no escape squares so I had 2 give up...

Avatar of sammynouri

the Bishop Sac was bad, the queen sac was ridiculous. The bishop sac was bad because you didn't have any lines to effectively attack his king, which clearly was why you sacced the bishop apparently. Had your knight been on g5 it may have been an effective sacrifice. Also don't bother calculating more than one variation (unless its OTB chess of course) just use intuition and make sure you have compensation for the piece.

Dale's advice is fine if you have a really good spider sense. If, like me, you are human not arachnid then the answer is don't sac unless you see a clear line which recovers your material or gives you strong mating prospects.

Avatar of Tactical_Battle

I would like if someone explained Characteristics of position dat is piece structure n defender piece mobility n ability 2 defend king......how dis aspects work???

Sounds like you are looking for a coach Pratik.

I normally try hard to sacrifice all my pieces apart from my knights - because horseys are cool

On the other hand, whenever I'm in the mood to sac a piece, I first consider my knights.

O, and here's an example of a sacrificial combo that did not work out:

You plug the position into Houdini, and if it suggests the same sacrifice you want to play, then do it.

You WHAT?

Avatar of csalami10

You should sacrifice when you can see concrete moves how you can get advantage out of the sacrifice. So if you can see that you can give mate, win material, or get a good usually positional compensation for the sacrifice you should go for it. If you don't see it, don't sacrifice because you can lose if that is really not good.

Avatar of EDB123

If you're playing against me, then offer all of your pieces to me, but only if you don't see a mating line.

Avatar of Tactical_Battle

@Csalami10.....

I agree with ur views but finding 8 moves deep winning combination is quite difficult. ...so after sac if I don't have sufficient follow up would lose d game
