should all towns and cities have at keast one chess shop? London has two for instance.
notmtwain

Most towns will not support a chess shop these days. London is lucky if it still has two. Are they profit making enterprises?

ATJ1968

Probably. They wouldn't exist if they didn't make any profit, same as any other business.

Well, some shops just squeak by.  My question was more about whether or not you have seen them.

What is the point with the prevalence of the internet? Shops around here might sell basic chess boards and whatnot. But other than that we just have the chess hall of fame and they have a decent gift shop with lots of different sets, books, and chess-themed knick knacks.

Chess shops are real things?
TwoMove

I think london only has one. A few years back chess and bridge bought the bcm shop, then closed down their old site.

Seems like they would be pretty hard to keep in business. Almost everything you could want chess wise is guaranteed to be cheaper online. It's interesting how online shopping has reduced "middleman" prices at the cost of these kind of stores. I saw a cute Mario chess board for sale at a card/ comic store and it was 20 dollars cheaper online. One day in the not too distant future there will no longer be stores just big factories that ship everything to your front door. That being said if there were a chess store in my area I would spend a lot of hours there.

You would spend hours but not money?

No notmtwain, I've only ever been to London three times.

Maybe you're right TwoMove.

So I can have a browse round whilst I'm out shopping with the wife Trextastic. But why have shops at all then? Just get anything on the net.

Sort of my point PlatChessPoorly. You'd spend hours there.
