Which chess software (GUI) would you guys recommend to play pgn files, analyze and allow for annotations? I'm trying to use Arena, but I'd like to find an equivalent. Free would be perfered, but if you know of great commercial GUIs (such as Aquarium or Fritz), please post your experiences with them! Thanks!

I've been a fan of Chessmaster for years, but recently I have just aquired Fritz 12 and it has improved my game immensely over the past two weeks alone. To me, it buries any other program that is out there. If you want to get better at chess, Fritz is the way to go.

Arena is very good for analysis.

It is important to understand when we analyse a game we have to play it or play the line the engine give, not just read the line given by the engine, especially because it is difficult to understand when it is no tactics and because the depth is not the same at the end of the line.

You can use the file done by arena but be careful with all th eline.

So perhaps better is to use infinite analyse and look the line with crtl+f12.

It takes a lot of time but it is the (pleasure Tongue out) of improve in chess.

So for what you want arena is very good.
