Chess-Steps Method - Good?

Has anyone used this series for teaching their kids? Too many chess manuals and resources out there, very confusing. My 1st grader (whose account this is) is about 1250 USCF. He just needs a couple of resources to keep in his book-bag when there is no Ipad or computer around. I like the idea of a systematic and complete progression, but I wonder if anyone here has used it with success.

 Thanks notmtwain!  Another question: for organized endgame progression for him: Silman or Dvoretsky? Becoming a strong endgame player is his goal for the summer.
