"Checkmate" comes from Persian "Shah mat" meaning "the king is dead".

bastiaan
cool, didn't know that. The grand vizier, my guess would be the queen.
It must've been the most renamed piece, I know it used to be the minister

Artist_Allan
well done bastiaan, the queen it is.

Hardly my good man. If you run a quiz, you gotta ask the question correctly. Checkmate is derived from the Persian words "Shah mat" which purportedly means the King is dead

Shah Mat - 'the king is dead' is universally accepted, but earlier translations have rendered it as 'the king is ambushed' or 'the king is helpless' the article by Jan Newton, 'The King isn't dead after all'. (September 2003) is posted at Chess Quest - The origins of Chess.
