I've just discovered these variations of Chess, not actually played any though.

What are your feelings on these and any other chess variations?

Chess 960, also known as Fisher random chess, is a variant where the pieces,  except for the pawns, start in a random position. It's nice in that it avoids the rote play of memorized openings. I also like that it in a way reinforces study of openings; you're forced to reexamine the basics, what pieces to move first and where to place them.

Chess480 is the same thing as Chess960 except the castling rules were simplified resulting is half the number of starting positions (half are tactically mirrored.)  In Chess960 the King and Rook end up landing in the squares they would land in if you were playing standard chess, even if this means the King doesn't move.  In Chess480 the King always moves, regardless of starting position.

That's it in a nutshell.  Further explaination if required.
