You could also not actually be connected and the client side isn't registering that fact. I've had a couple of games (I only play limited Live) where my opponent's clock was still going down but my client had a glitch and hadn't updated the position where it was actually my move.

I now have the habit of force refreshing the client if it looks like that might be occurring.
