eric will sell it for no less than a million
chess.com Estimated Worth $385323.2 USD

To those who mentioned ICC, they should realize that you don't actually have to access any of the ICC webpages to play on ICC, since the Dasher program takes care of that.

Chess.com is worth whatever somebody is willing to pay for it. Nothing more , nothing less....
QFT, just like anything else. If I show you a wooden stick, and you go all crazy about it, and you pay me 1.000$ for it, than that is how worth it is. You can not count all sentimental values of this site, or any site, into cash.

To value a business, especially one like a website that doesn't have a significant amount of assets, the income and market approaches are much more significant than the asset approach. Even the market approach would tie into the income generating ability and be expressed as a function of some form of revenue or income. And while valuation isn't a precise science, there is a great deal of theory and case law that guide the work of appraisers.
Side note: actually the value of goodwill should already be reflected in the income approach, it would have to be added back on the asset approach.

Discounted stream of future profits - seems to fit then. Future profits are projected revenue - there are also business brokers and CPA inputs - GAAP too I imagine

It is worth a lot beyond just money. Rolef

For http://www.dnscoop.com/ it's worth $40,000,
for http://www.sitevaluecalculator.com/ it's $193,415
for http://www.cwire.org/website-value-calculator/ it's $249,339
for http://www.cubestat.com/www.chess.com it's $311,700.51
while
for http://directory.sootle.com/website-worth/ is $1,756,107,
for http://www.adminstool.com/domain-value/ $2,002,830 (...)
and for http://domainvalue.congland.com/ it's $2,162,542 (.....)
I guess a big role is played by domain age (15 yrs) and of course, name, plus, it has good ranking. Some domain sites anyway value imho too much the domain age and the number of pages, but traffic is not always related to page number.
The value I trust much is the one given by http://www.yourwebsitevalue.com/details/chess_com.html, $190,288, but there is to say that as it seems, apart from the domain age indicator, the value has boosted a lot in the last two years, so a price between $200,000-$350,000 could be appropriated, if a corp. would be interested to buy it in crisis times for its evil plans

Everything has a price (even Kaka), and if a company approached Erik with a large enough sum of money I see it very likely that he would sell.
Chess.com has create something other chess sites can not, or will not come close too. They have written their page in history, some things in this world are beyond value, if you believe they have more to offer then just material stuff. Some things are priceless, Chess.com is priceless.

*opens wallet* ... hmm... I'll buy chess.com for $235.23 :P
Well that's an interesting statistic... it is a pretty sweet site :D
I "up" the offer to $250.00 cash money (US) and my 10 year old Timex.
Yeah, I used to play on World Chess Network as well. With them and others, ICC has a pretty well-established history of eliminating its competition by buying it out (or worse) and then shutting it down.
If Erik says chess.com is here to stay, that's encouraging; it's just something I worry about, having been burned in the past. I'd like to see more people realize what a wonderful resource they have here, and become paying members so Erik's not faced with that difficult choice someday.
