Chess.com mistake

I was playing live when my opponent left. A few seconds went by then this came up, " zhelleff  may have violated our Fair Play policy - it has been noted and they may have their account restricted."

Now I was winning and my opponent was getting his hat handed to him so I have no clue what he did wrong. No way he was cheating and he didn't say anything to me so I don't get it. If any staff reads this I think this guy is OK, he didn't do anything wrong. Surprised

Your opponent abandoned the game without resigning. That is what triggered that warning. It is part of the new Fair Play policy.

Yeah , it has happened with me too lately, quite a few times and always when I was winning and my opponent either got disconnected or simply didn't move, to let the clock , ring the "bell" for him !

I think its the new Fair Play Policy here, which discourages players to abondon a [ lost] game, without resigning ! This can be v irritating [ and time wasting] for the opponent ,especially in a 10-15 min game , who has worked hard for a win n is left sulking ,as the opponent leaves him hanging , while he is watching another game, some TV ...or just chilling !!

Can someone post this policy or direct me where I can read it. TIA. Smile

Fair Play Policy

Chess.com encourages players to be kind and show good sportsmanship. Our Fair Play policy expects that players will not...

  • intentionally disconnect during games
  • stall to make opponents wait unnecessarily
  • frivolously abort games because they don't want to play black, etc. (Note that we have now implemented a limit on the frequency with which users may abort games; please Abort only when necessary. Also see below.)

If your account is flagged for habitually breaking this policy, your play will be restricted, requiring you to wait 5 minutes between games (including aborted games).

Is this policy consistent with rules in chess clubs and tournament play?

??????

How could it be?  Online play is a completely different situation.

Had the same message that my opponent may well have violated the policy when he disconnected. I can't see that he would have intentionally disconnected though as he was completely in control and I had little to no hope of winning. However:
Fair Play Police states:
On his or her turn, each player has 15-20 seconds to make their first move. If this does not happen, the game will be automatically aborted. This has a negative effect on the Fair-Play record of the player failing to move. (But if you hit Abort, it affects your record! It's best to be patient for a few seconds.)

That's a bit of a pain actually! I'm a bit rubbish so unless someone moves on the c or d file, I'm stumped and it will take me a bit longer than 20 seconds to make my mind up.

What if his connection to the internet dropped? It does happen. I hardly think that is a reason for punishment. A player I was in a game with just now left, and I don't think he quit, he wasn't doing bad at all.

If it happens in a few games here and there, it won't matter. The policy is set up to catch people that disconnect all the time, on a lot of their games. I don't know the number/% for a lot, but the policy isn't for those that occasionally disconnect.

I understand. Thank you for clearing that up! It sounds reasonable.

Yes, in OTB Tournaments you can't leave the table/room for more than a specified amount of time without being disqualified.
