Chess.com Pulling Ahead Of The Competition

Over the past year I have dabbled in online Chess using chess.com, ICC, FICS, and Chesscube.

In the past, I thought that ICC and Chess.com were basically neck and neck with ICC being better for live coverage of events and having a more stable, customizable live chess experience.

Now? I've been digging into real chess, seriously at this point.  Long games online and off.  I think Chess.com has closed the gap with ICC as for what's offered in the live chess department.  There's a lot of room for improvement and further development on this front here at Chess.com but I can't see anything that doesn't make this site the clear #1, one stop shop for online chess.

What do you think?

I watched some of the USCL on Chess TV here tonight and thought it was really well done.

I actually got a refund for my $19.95 3 month sub to ICC today.  It's a great little place to play chess, but it just isn't worth the money anymore when compared to what we have here on Chess.com.

Just to update this: I never knew I was eligible for a 30 day trial on ICC until I got an email about it after I cancelled.  I called them up and they resinstated my username Cool.

I might have spoke too soon.  There are some really cool things about ICC and Dasher/Blitzin.

1) The clock is just better for live chess.  It's extremely accurate and lag free.

2) You have every game stored on your harddrive and emailed to you instantly.

3) Stockfish comes included and you can analyze any of the games using any other engine you load into Dasher.

4) Live Event Coverage and ChessFM.

5) You can watch a lot of slow games featuring titled player vs. titled player.  It's going on 24/7.

6) Hundreds of chat channels centered around chess.

7) The videos are fantastic.

8) Dozens upon dozens of different chess variants available.

9) Your client, as well as gameplay, is extremely customizable.

10) You can load up any number of thousands of games in the database or in history and analyze them yourself.

So I'll use my diamond here and my sub there together at least for the time being but I'm definitely enjoying what ICC has to offer as for live chess and instruction.  I didn't really look around too much the other day and was basing my experience on my brief time spent there in the spring. They've added/updated the server and it's busier than ever.

I prefer FICS (and ICC) over Chess.com. But, I am only interested in live chess servers and do not use extras. I prefer the GUIs, customizable options (saving games to the hardrive), serious opponents, etc. I will admit though, there are times when I cannot find an opponent on FICS (usually 15-20 min games) and I can on Chess.com.

I always said ICC was better for playing, and chess.com was better for studying. And chesscube is there for making you feel good about yourself, because the ratings are so inflated Undecided
