I think this is a great idea also.

It's not one to one.  How much would they want for 1 lesson online with a group?  1 lesson could be a video annotation of a recent game, use 100 per credit hour, 4 credits normal for each class.  This means $400 for about 2 classes a week, 4 weeks in a month, 4 months in a semester, giving us $12.50/class.  That is about 12 lessons, 1 per month......blah blah blah

There are LITERALLY thousand of hours of exactly this available to members....http://www.chess.com/videos/

Great, then change it so we don't have to pay for a full year.  Sell us a 3-4 month package.  I don't need a full year, and the current monthly plan is too high.  $8/month is ok, $10/month is ok, but $14/month, no.  I don't want to spend $14/month for 4 months and pay $56.  It should be more like $45.

I lose 1 month or 1.5 months with the current monthly plan.

yes, yes, we have been over this. I said I liked your pricing structure and think management might, too. Send it ito them.

I am only saying that the video lessons you suggest ALREADY EXIST, and are AMAZING. Stop bickering and look around...take advantage of the 30-day guarantee...what you are asking for is already here.

Dude, stop trying to nickel and dime the site that's trying to help you have fun and get better at chess. If you can't afford it, don't buy it and quit whining.

But on ICC, you play chess. Here, you do tactics, watch instructive videos, analyze games and all that other crap.

You get more for your money here. Which is why I'm getting a year when I get paid. :)

Well...you don't *just* play chess on ICC. ICC offers a wealth of videos, comes with Stockfish built in, has Chessfm (which destroys ChessTV), has a massive library of archived games and Chessfm shows, has a trainingbot that you can do tactical puzzles with, has a lecturebot that gives lessons 24/7, and has a more in depth online chess format with features such as judgebot and adjournments. On top of this, I think that ICC's service is hands down a better option for coaches looking to teach students over the internet. It has video chat and visual aids built in that allow you to learn like your teacher is in the room with you. It's a fantastic service. The question for me is which one is going to help me improve from my current low rating more. Chess Mentor is solid gold for someone in my shoes and the community here is massive. Along with the analysis engine and all of the other bells and whistles that this site has...it's not an easy choice.

Once again, though: It's an even tougher choice when I realize that I can get ICC+ChessTempo for the same price per month as just Chess.com. As said, if Chess.com just offered a $9.99/mo option it would be a much easier decision to make.

edit: And, ironically, as I was writing this post I was offered a free 10-day trial to Chess.com. Obviously I'm going to take advantage of this so let's see if I stick around after my trial is up.

I think it would be fair to add that FICS is arguably *better* than ICC and is 100% free. Babaschess is, by far, the best client to play chess on period. So one could also play on FICS to supplement what they get with either service they subscribe to, as well.

It's not just mine, have a look at the competition (I prefer chess.com services but not their pricing):

So, I have a few months I want to play chess.  Where am I going to put my money into?  A plan that requires 100 for a year or one that is 35 for 6 months?  Even if I want 1 year, I can save 30 by doing 6 months twice with ICC.  It's a no brainer.

I didn't know about their pricing. Will have a look.

Your last post is excellent, very instructive. ICC actually gives you points, each 30 points equals 1 dollar, you get 30 points as soon as you sign up.

chesstempo...chessbase+Guess the Move and you don't need to pay for chesstempo, basically.

Regarding the quality of the videos, I prefer chess.com's by a very narrow margin, but they are definitely in the same league.

One more thing in favour of chess.com is that the site is evolving constantly, in 1 month we got new app for our smartphones, chess.com university, simuls with GMs, new lessons for Chess Mentor implementing an improved Guess the Move variety, chessvibes is gathering strength...  In short, the gap between chess.com and the rest will only get bigger in the coming months, unless FIDE Arena surprises us all (very unlikely).

What is chess.com university?

Where can I find Guess the Move?

I would like to know this as well. I was unaware of Chess.com University.

Agreed. I remember it was supposed to launch in September and then got pushed back.

Why doesn't chess.com take advantage of my 11 month guarantee?  Give me good stuff each month and I will be a happy returning customer.  No, I have been screwed over by people promising me a free this, or a free that, and that I can get a 100% refund if I don't like.  I will not get fooled again.

"stop trying to nickel and dime the site"

Nickel and diming is on individual purchases.  Your comment has nothing to do with 1 month or 1 year.  This is hardly nickel and diming.  If they gave a 4 month offer, and I said I wanted only 3 months, then it would be nickel and diming.  Learn the actual meaning of what you are writing.

"If you can't afford it, don't buy it and quit whining."

This has nothing to do with affording or not affording.  It has to do with rewarding regular customers.  If you continue to use a service then there should be benefits added.  You shouldn't be required to pay upfront a year if you only want 4 months.  Either you get this concept or you are sheeple.

tl;dr. Quit whining.

I'm surprised the thread hasn't been locked down yet.The most annoying thing about chess.com are the boards.I've never enjoyed playing live chess much because of the 2nd rate boards. The boards on Playchess.com and even ICC make you wanna play again and again.I think atleast diamond members should get good quality boards.

ICC has forums?

That's fine for satisfied customers.  However, as a starting offer, they should give a 3-4 month deal.  If you want a better deal then sign up for the year.

I am a 3, 4, or 6 month shopper.  I don't want to pay an inflated 1 month fee, and I don't want to have to pay for a full year.

You are missing the point.  It has nothing to do with money.  It has to do with picking a number between 1 and 12.  3, 4, and 6 are all great numbers to offer for months of membership.  Give me a 3,4, or 6 month deal.

Ok...so I'm on a free 10 day trial of the diamond membership. In the past I didn't even try correspondance chess on here but at this point I'm playing both live standard as well as correspondance so we'll see how much mileage I can get out of the site over the next week and a half. The goal is significant improvement over the next several months so let's see if the membership here can help me accomplish that. I'll also get a chance to see if the diamond here is really worth $14/mo.
