Yes.  I used FICS until it was hacked.  At which point, I searched for other places to play.  Was that last year or 2012? I don't remember.  Anyway, I did make a chess.com account (this one) back in 2008 but wasn't involved here.

Please add this to your biography of tigerprowl

Didn't they rectify the hacking issue over on FICS? Was some data permanently lost or was it all restored?

Bardu

FICS is completely restored. And I agree, Babas Chess is pretty much the best way to play online chess.

Well...you don't *just* play chess on ICC. ICC offers a wealth of videos, comes with Stockfish built in, has Chessfm (which destroys ChessTV), has a massive library of archived games and Chessfm shows, has a trainingbot that you can do tactical puzzles with, has a lecturebot that gives lessons 24/7, and has a more in depth online chess format with features such as judgebot and adjournments. On top of this, I think that ICC's service is hands down a better option for coaches looking to teach students over the internet. It has video chat and visual aids built in that allow you to learn like your teacher is in the room with you. It's a fantastic service. The question for me is which one is going to help me improve from my current low rating more. Chess Mentor is solid gold for someone in my shoes and the community here is massive. Along with the analysis engine and all of the other bells and whistles that this site has...it's not an easy choice.

You also play against other premium members only so that eliminates alot of immaturity related problems (and cheating) that you encounter here.

How prevalent is cheating here on Chess.com?

Why Pay???

Did you even read the thread? There are several features which would help basically all players under 2000 here on Chess.com that can only be accessed with a premium membership.

You can find Anything to do with Chess! for free on the Web! then just get down your local Clubs! & Play!

Well that's the question: Are all of the free features and tools available on the web helpful enough for an improving player to warrant he or she not buying a pay sub to either Chess.com or ICC.

I'm surprised the thread hasn't been locked down yet.The most annoying thing about chess.com are the boards.I've never enjoyed playing live chess much because of the 2nd rate boards. The boards on Playchess.com and even ICC make you wanna play again and again.I think atleast diamond members should get good quality boards.

ICC has forums?

I don't know.

Well this is a pointless conversation. What it comes down to is if you don't like it, find somewhere else that you are satisfied with. It is their business and they can run it how they want. I think $100 per year is the best deal because of all the different types of services they provide. Sure they should listen to the consumer, but they can only take that so far. If they listened to everyone Erik and all our chess friends trying to teach us a thing or two would be out of a great source of income. I think it is wonderful that Chess.com provides such a great resource where we can learn from some of the best in the world for a meager $8.00 a month. Besides, have you seen what some of the coaches charge per hour? It is outrageous.

I've been following this thread, and here's my take:

ICC vs Chess.com

Benefits of ICC:
1) Live Chat - Shouts, Channels, and Private Tells.  Simple ways to communicate live with friends rather than posting everything to forums

You get group chat and chat on live chess

2) More Options - Live play here has set time controls.  ICC, you can play anything, 2 0, 10 0, 30 0, 42 17, or any other corny time control.

Same here

3) Cheaper!

Diamond isn't the only membership level here...

4) A rating system where you can actually gain points - Here you are stuck at an 8-point system after being done with provisional games, and the fact that everybody starts at 1200 here sucks - you end up way underrated.  It should start you at your USCF, BCF, or FIDE rating at the time of your registration.

There are people who didn't cheat in the 2500s who started at 1200, and you can easily lie about your grade

5. MORE PAYMENT OPTIONS!  ICC, you can get 6-month.  They should have that available here for the people talking about how they want to play here in the Winter.  Make it $5/month, $17/half year, or $29/year for Gold, the highest might be $14/month, $59/half year, or $99/year.  The fact that your only options are month or full year is the problem I'm seeing on this thread.

Benefits of Chess.com

1) Better GUI interface.  ICC is all text-driven.

2) Forums - while this site sux in the "Live Chat" category, ICC sux at having areas where threads can go on over the course of hours.

Note that what people mis-name "Turn-based chess" (guys, it's called "Correspondence Chess") is also available on ICC.  It's just not terribly popular there.

In the previous comment, refutations of arguments are in bold.

Power-Up

I live in Kentucky, and not very many people play chess here. There are a few clubs, but the closest one to me is 30 miles away, and they charge a 90 dollar fee for a membership, and the means to get me an official rating.

I would love to join a club, but an hour drive for two hours of chess, compaired to 100 dollars for all the perks of this place and the means to play whenever I want.

I agree that this discussion has been pretty unproductive.  Someone should ask Art of War if anyone has improved their chess directly due to their chess.com membership.  If so, who and how?

How would I know if someone else has improved because of their chess.com membership?

TheArtofWar82

I haven't been here for over a year just because I registered this screen name over a year ago. Before Monday I hadn't even been on here in nearly five months. So no...I would not be a good test subject to ask if the diamond has improved my chess. After I use it over the coming days and weeks I'll see. Not as if that really addresses the subject of that thread though.

Why do you repeatedly make new screen names on here and follow me around the forums? You do realize there's obviously something wrong with you, no?

RonaldJosephCote

This thread started with nonsence about having more options vs cost of subscriptions. Are you saying Ronald McDonald, and Mayor McCheese are destroying my rating??

macer75

I noticed that everyone on this thread is talking about Diamond membership. What's wrong with Platinum? It's only half the price of Diamond, and based on the descriptions on the upgrade page, the only differences are no video lessons, and a limit on the number of chess mentor lessos per day and computer analyses per week (and both of those limits are pretty high). But with unlimited TT, Game Explorer and Chess.com TV, would you really miss those few things that Diamond members have but Platinum members don't?

Well, take the courses by Jeremy Silman for instance, they teach you openings, the reason behind the moves, the choices, the new and old lines, why and when to play them. He teaches you endgames, triangulation, oposition, the square rule, etc. You learn about weak squares and how to provoke and exploit them, break moves, etc.

  • GM Roman Dzindzichashvili for instance taught me how to play some openings, I remember one of them in which you have a very aggresive pawn in the opening, and he says, just ignore it for now and continue developing normally, you do it and it works like a miracle. That's the trick, you remember the stuff you watch on the videos. You learn new ways of defense you haven't even thought of. Last week Dan Heiman told us to take our time in the endgame, even longer than usual and forget about the principles, for me, this advice is priceless, because I was taking close to no time to move based on principles and I screw up quickly.
  • You will get at least a solid knowledge of the opening principles and the middle game.
