Chessmaster personalities

Just a few questions.

Karpov personality is rather weak. Do you have any tweaks to improve this personality while maintaining the defensive style of play. The Petrosian personality is also relatively weak. I think the reason is that the defensive playing style is too passive. So it has to be balanced in a way that makes it effective in another.

(Transportation Table: 16 MB) is also quite low on modern hardware. Isn't 64 or 128 mb better in 2023 for blitz or rapid tc.

Third question. CM main uses 1-3-3-5-9 values. Deviations from these will result in sub-optimal piece values ?

Tested the Magnus vs Hikaru personality recipes.

Regardless of how you change the settings TheKing (Chessmaster's engine) is too weak to make a believable Magnus Carlsen bot/personality.

Still cool that someone is attempting to emulate.

Though I think someone only at very high level can make suggestions to The King engines parameters or other adaptable chess engines to come close to their style of play.

Larry Evans input created the original personalities.

I'm not sure who created the other add-ons years later which can be downloaded as a patch including Kasparov and other great players etc.

Kasparov is on par Carlsen with suggested parameters.

Karpov is rather weak, the reason is of the defensive parameters is somewhat passive and make the evaluation not on par. It would have been great to see a defensive playstyle that works.

Rubinstein is one of the strongest non-addons. Even though Topalov personality might prevail in a match.

You can't create Magnus (kasparov, etc...) personality with default Chessmaster opening book.

In order to emulate Magnus you should create his own opening book by downloading all his games from any database, and run a program to create opening books from games. To find such program just do a simple search on google.

Requesting Leonid Stein personality. Stein is absolutely a phenomenon player. Tied Korchnoi, Smyslov and beat Tal 3-0 with 15 draws. Leonid Stein beat David Bronstein 4 to 1, with 11 draws.

I downloaded this and clicked on it, but it doesn't install. What do I do with this file? I don't have a high degree of computer skill. Also, are these the "Archangel" etc new personalities?

It looks like that's a rar file. You can unzip it with either 7zip or unrar program. After unziping, you would place the personalities and opening books in the folders with those names under <your Chessmaster directoryl>\data

But no, it doesn't include Archangel, et. I believe that link is the updated grandmaster personalities and improved opening books. (Someone with Chessmaster 9000 made new opening books for the CM 10th grandmasters by using the first 20 moves of every game the grandmaster won, and taking into account the frequency of the moves played. That's probably what this "Grandmaster Edition" download still contains.)

On that note, does anyone know what effect the material/positional slider has on the piece values vs positional values? For example, if I move the material/positional slider -10 toward material, what % increase does that give to material values? This is useful to know so that you can get closer to the Archangel, etc. strengthened personality Arena settings of, say, 1.25 for a pawn, which is impossible in Chessmaster without knowing how much to adjust the material/positional slider, since Chessmaster only adjusts material by 0.1 or more.

I were told that if the King engine were used in other GUI piece values can be adjusted per 1.25

I want to tweak Petrosian rook value at 4.85 rather than 4.9 but i need to use the engine and personality in other program.

I found a partial answer to the material/positional slider. Someone used Crafty 19.19 to make a log file of interactions with Chessmaster, and came up with:

* Slider all the way to "material" -> material values are x3, positional are x1/2

* Slider all the way to "positional" -> positional values are x3, material are x1/2

So theoretically, if -100 is 3x material, and 0 is 1x material, -50 should be 2x material, etc. And if -100 is 1/2 positional, and 0 is 1x positional, then -50 should be 3/4 positional.

Then reverse this for values 0-100 toward "positional".

Also, I figured out a way to edit the ratings of .CMP files. Say you want to edit "BuddyGuy.CMP" :

* Open BuddyGuy.CMP in a hex editor (I used "Fred" editor)

* Go to characters 57 and 58 (each "character" in hex is something like 0a, f2, 25, bb, etc.)

* Open "calculator" app, set it to "programmer" mode, type in the rating you want, and click "hex". It will show up as a hex value

* Now take the 2nd half of the calculated hex value and put it in character 57, and put the first half in character 58 of BuddyGuy.CMP.

* You might need to add a 0 in front of hex value from calculator if it is an odd number of digits.

Example:

I wanted to import Arasan 24 (the strongest winboard engine I could find, currently less than 100 elo behind Stockfish 16 on CCRL, and it also can be used in "setup board" mode in Chessmaster, a rare trait among the engines I've tried before).

I imported Arasan as a winboard engine. Then I opened Arasan.CMP in my hex editor (Fred shows 28 characters per line, so 57 and 58 were the first ones on line 3).

I calculated Arasan's CCRL rating of 3451 as D7B, which is 0D 7B, which switches to 7B 0D.

I then replaced characters 57 and 58 (which were both 00) with 7b and 0d

Then in Chessmaster (10th edition), Arasan appeared as the same winboard engine, but with a shown rating of 3451. Done.

This is pretty useful if you wanted to play rated games against other engines with known ratings, instead of living with the fact that Chessmaster wouldn't let imported engine ratings be anything other than 0.

** Note: Be careful with hex editing. You should first open a known personality from Chessmaster and confirm that characters 57 and 58 convert back to the known rating. These characters might be in a different spot in CM11th CMP files.

it seems attack trumps defense in general. It would be nice if Karpov could get an adjustment as this profile is weak, suggestions 😇
