I never read the OP nor the first post Weller.

Nevertheless stand by what I say:

  • NM/CM = ELO 2200 approx. Equivalent to expertise in chess.
  • ELO 2400 = brilliance/achievement in chess.

NM in US is ELO 2000. What can they teach? (other than basic ideas) if unable to progress beyond that themselves.

Actually NM is 2200 USCF.

2200 is more like 2100 FIDE I think. US Grandmasters tend to have a USCF rating around 80-100 points higher than their FIDE elo - I'd say they're probably the most frequent FIDE tournament players and therefore the best group to use as a comparison.

2100 FIDE is a pretty damn good chess player!

Also, it depends on what you call 'lousy'. I bet you 2100 FIDE is higher than yours.

USCF ratings are inflated. (although they do keep trying to adjust this). Once NM awarded is given for life.

Let's split the difference & say US NM is equivalent to ELO 2100.
