Computer Analysis Guide?

Avatar of mwjackson

I've read on various blogs etc that some people run all their game PGN's through various programs that spit out statistics on the games they've played.

Eg. Win 45% of the time playing Reversed Sicilian, but only 35% of the time playing Great Snake. Or that I generally make a mistake on move 5 of the Modern etc etc.

What is the software that people use?

Is there a link someone can point me to that outlines an intro to computer analysis of my games?

Anyone else? I don't want to shell out significant money on a chess engine, only to find that it doesnt do what I hoped it would, so any help would be appreciate...

I use Scid (http://scid.sf.net), with the free Rybka 2.3.2 engine.

It does all of the things mentioned, except for noticing that you "generally make a mistake on move 5", you can look at overall statistics, or analyze single games, but such general conclusions are left as an exercise for the user :-)

Perfect man, thats exactly what I was looking for. And best of all, its open source!

For others reading this topic, I'll second Scid and Rybka. Both are fantastic tools for going over games that you've played, and with the Annotation feature of Scid, it's quite easy to set-up and use.

I have created a Scid users group just now: http://www.chess.com/groups/home/scid-users

I'm a long time fan of Scid, probably know most of its features, thought it might be nice to have forum for it.
