You don't really. All of the computers I've faced always make the same moves in the same situations so it is possible to "memorize" the games and they have no ability for creative thinking which can be a bad thing for human players who out-think themselves into making not-so-good moves.

I've found that the 1600 rated computer is much harder than most of the 1600's I face. They just seem to counter everything I do in advance and are especially good at tactics. How does one adapt his/her style to play a computer?
The downfall sometimes is, they make a random king move at the beginning of the game that makes no sense.
