Carlsen now WC in rapid chess, sadly enough.

Once again west beats east .

That last rapid game ending was beautiful.  What vision that Carlsen has.

Not really. Many strong blitz players can spot that one even in a blitz game.

you see cheap shots like that on tictacs trainer.

Is that a training app for tic tac toe? I'd love to try it out sometime.

Evidently Sergey's mind can only run in first gear. Magnus took him to school.

look at Karjacksons Rxc7??? in his first loss in the playoffs! even allowing for time trouble, a 1300 rated would see how ridiculous it is. this match was designed to get more youths into chess, no way will it work.

Actually a 1330 will easily realize that white is dead lost after 37...Ra2, so 38.Rxc7 with a few seconds on the clock does not change much, if anything.

Karjakin's team is now demanding a RECOUNT !  Smile

a far cry from Fischer - Spassky one has to say.

Bobby would always try to kill you from the start, with white or black.

That's probably one of the reasons why he finally cracked under his own pressure.

Both Fischer and Larsen hated draws , so much so that they both often " overreached" and lost positions that were " drawish " .  None of todays top players seem to have that same hatred of draws ... NONE .

I guess that you didn't follow game 8 :-)

Best comment in the entire thread. Chess is in a sad state.

Chess may be in a sad state, but NOT for the reasons quoted.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with a "legitimate" draw.  Playing 6 moves and agreeing to a draw in a world championship is utter cr&p!

However, in a legit game, I am by no means hesitant to play for the draw if that's what the position calls for.  I am not going to ruin my position just to chance it that my opponent will miss something.  THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH DRAWING!  In 2553 tournament games that I've played Over the Board of Standard Time Control, I have drawn 572 times, and while a few of those are missed wins, and a few of them I was lucky to draw where my opponent missed a win, most of them are legit, and I'm not afraid to take the half point!

What is wrong now is that they have resorted now to a 12-game Match?  Come on, Man!  The match needs to be longer.  Either go back to the 24-game system or else go for the 6 points, draws are zero approach.

The format has dwindled.  24 between Kasparov and Karpov to 20 in 1995 against Anand to 16 against Kramnik in 2000 to this godawful 12 game format!

JGambit

if you hate draws then playing chess for a living in the computer age would be foolish

Reb

Excellent point TF .  I agree that as the # of games in a match get less and less the less willing either player will be to take " risks " in an attempt to win because a single loss is harder to come back from the fewer games there are .

pfren

You shouldn't expect any sane player taking risks in such a short 12-game match. It really needs to last longer.

There is a lot more money at stake these days. I'm sure it plays somewhat of a role in how games are played and that is the sadest thing of all.
