I would suggest you just focus on your weaknesses and strengths and forget about rating for the present time.
coping with rating loss
However this small victory was short lived because I have now dropped abruptly to 1160 which I was at MONTHS ago. This is really annoying because I know I am much better because when I play classical games OTB I beat people rated 1500+ on online chess blitz.
In short my question is any general advice from people with similar experiences?
A rating is simply an estimate of your recent performance. Its not an estimate of your ability. If your rating drops 100 points, your chess knowledge hasnt suddenly dropped 100 points.
Like many, youre placing way to much emphasis on the rating, and not on the learning. As long as you continue doing this, expect to keep experiencing the same frustration with the same results.
You were rated about 700 1 year ago.
That's a lot of improvement.
I decided to look when I noticed you said something odd... you were disappointed about being a rating you were months ago. You capitalized "months" as if that were a long time. Chess improvement happens over many years. If you're thinking in terms of months still you must be new... yep, you're new.
So from this two tips:
1) Don't worry about it, if you got to 1200-1300 this fast, any setbacks now for sure will be temporary.
2) Improvement is often in the pattern of 2 steps forward, 1 step back, and after the beginner level improvement slows down.
