That's right people, move along, nothing to see here.
Copyright on games

As far as I´m aware, there isn´t. Otherwise I owe a lot of people a lot of money(!)
I´m though curious what the official answer would be...
And what would the copyright rules be? Only name them? Or mail the family of the passed away chess player?

That's an excellent question! I can't imagine people getting paid everytime a game is reproduced for distribution. And I can't imagine that there weren't at least some people trying to get copyrights to their games for the purpose of making money(especially americans). Logically the answer has to be that chess games cannot be copyrighted. But then again, who said copyright laws would be logical?
I am considering to propose the running of a chess column for a regional weekly newspaper of a small coastal town. May I use the chess puzzles in Chess.com, or is there a copyright on them? Where else can one get publishable chess material and what are the legal issues governing its use in newspapers?

I would talk to the staff about this.
I have a question for the sake of curiosity because I heard of someone who is writing a book and the theme of the book is a specific chess game.
Are there copyright on chess games. If so, who is the owner of that copyright? Could it be that both players have joint copyright or would the organisers of the event where the game was played have the copyright?
