I saw how to get to that. It looks like it just makes the bottom right window full sceen. I don't get what it is. I really do appriciate the time you took. I just don't understand what to do with it. It just seems to "blow up" the icon and tile I highlight. I can not move anything. So I was wondering. What it can do?
I can create you a board for blindfold chess if you like.

The original WinBoard link I gave ( http://hgm.nubati.net/WinBoard-4.8.0.exe ) was a single file, but it was an installer, which (when you run it) should unpack itself into a plethora of files and folders, and create menu items for them. One of the menu items (in the Windows start menu) should be called "WinBoard Files", and bring you to the WinBoard folder where winboard.exe is.
But no matter; you seem to have all the needed stuff in one folder. It is very strange that p2p doesn't seem to notice the custom.dat file. Are you sure it is called custom.dat and not custom.dat.txt? It is a bit fishy that it is the only file in the screenshot you show of the folder for which the extension in mentioned (.dat). E.g. for the black Knight icon it says "winboard", and not "winboard.exe".
When you save the text from NotePad, make sure you select "All files" when you type the name custom.dat.
The only other explanation is that you would not have the right version of p2p.exe there.
All pawns(even the advanced one) can promote. I don't care if it is to always a queen or just out of what they lost. What ever is easier.
The question is also where they promote. I would assume they promote at the last rank of the 10x10 area, and that you don't have to move the central Pawns, (say), to the Joker squares.
This actually has a bearing on how you have to describe the game in the custom.dat file. For 'engine-defined variants' WinBoard uses the concept of a 'parent variant', from which it would inherit most of the rules. (And then board size, participating pieces, how they are called and how they move can be modified.) The depth of the promotion zone, and whether you can freely choose or are restricted by what was captured are still intrinsic properties of each standard variant, and cannot be overruled. So you have to pick a parent variant that has the desired rules.
Because WinBoard counts the Wizzard squares and the Pegasus/etc. squares as part of the board, you actually need a promotion zone of 3 ranks to get the last rank of the main playin 10x10 area in it. WinBoard standard variants that have such a zone are Makruk, Grand Chess and Elven Chess, but Makruk is not suitable as it has no promotion choice, but always promotes to the piece we used as Joker. Grand Chess allows promotion to captured pieces only, and to make that work the captured pieces would have to be displayed in 'holdings' next to the board. (So you can click them to choose, in case of promotion.) In that case we would have to specify in the 'setup' command 14x12+11_grand (as there are 11 capturable piece types for which space must be reserved next to the board). Elven Chess has unconditional promotion choice, so we could also write 14x12+0_elven as board size/parent variant.

Wow there is so much to this. I never would have guessed it would take so much to make a chess game. Kind of what to say. Just do away with the promotions. Just to make things easier. You were right where they would promote. Yet Still the pieces move pattern must be changed and moves displayed. Would this still even be possible?
The custom file say .dat Soley because I named it that. Which is odd. Normally if I do that, say put .png on a file. It tries to turn it into a PNG. So my file was just me copying what you posted into word pad. Then renaming it custom.dat. I will go back and download the winboard from your link. I actually found it elsewhere. Maybe that is the issue. I'm almost starting to think this is beyound me. I get so messed up when trying to figure it out on my own.
Benzodiazepine I like what it looks like. The ranks I guess I never viewed as imporatant. I have a pic with the ranks. As well as the pieces names. Which I have not fully desided on. The main thing is the board is sideways. Which I did just to make it fit the screen better. I know relieze I should not have displayed it sideways. Aside from that it looks great. I like how the tiles enlarge when highlighted. I have been spending the last 6 hours playing with the game curiour. I'm surprisingly making progress. The fact it don't enforce rules is becoming sort of nice.
I'm thinking that I should have not cared about rule inforcement, from the beginning. Just I wanted this to teach others how to play. So showing the possible moves. Before they take that move. Would be a must have feature. No matter how it's made. I just can't figure out how to make the black tiles.
I guess I'll be playing with winboard for the next few hours. To try and get this custom file to load. To see what that does. Thank you Muller & Benzodiazepine for taking the time to work with helping me!

I'm new here but I'm a computer programmer looking for paid work, so I could code it. We'd have to exchange a lot of information first about what exactly you want.
P.S.--I have an active account on oDesk, where people seek programmers for specific one-time projects, so you could always post your offer there, which would provide both of us with a more formal framework, and a safer framework for paying for programming work. If you choose to post on oDesk, you could just post a message here with either the URL or keywords to search for, so I (or anyone else) here could find it.
I have a few ideas of my own and I am considering when I go to school, taking some programming classes, to code my own ideas. In the mean time, I would really like to get a few things set in motion. I eventually would like one program to better automate my work but, I could live with a few smaller applications that would be a lot less useful to anyone looking to filch. While I like the idea of being able to seek and pay a programmer using such a medium, what is to stop a programmer from stealing someone's idea ?

Save yourself the effort and money: Make a screen shot of the thing and tell your friend to do the same then use Microsoft Paint to edit in the moves that you send each other in some notation system via Facebook or whatever. Hey its very crude but its FREE.
Or even emailing cell phone pics would be easier if each of you made an identical board and pieces.

I have considered that already. I will need something to do as I get more sedentary. I do learn rather quickly, usually. I already have some basic understanding of how programming is done. I tend think if I were able to speak at length with the right programmer whom I could trust to not steal my ideas, they may be able to point me to existing resource, similar to what I am wanting to achieve, that could expedite my pursuits.
PS, I am not looking to create a multiplayer game for the net. Just some privately used applications for compiling statics from chess game analyis.

I used to waste my time, money and brain cells doing such things. I still drink occasionally but, I try to stay healthy and sober usually. The last time I got drunk, I went on a three day vodka drinking bing and found myself in the middle of disagreements with people here on chess.com...

Can you please stop spamming the thread.....I'm looking in to what you asked Muller. I'll try that right now. I just open & instaled winboard. I replaced the .exe with the new one you gave me. As well as put all those files in the same folder.(C:\WinBoard-4.8.0\WinBoard) So I'm checking if things run differently. Not sure how to use the cmd to well. I think this pic shows what you wanted.
Yep it is still a text document...That just might be the issue. I'll try looking up how to make it again.

Yet if there is no easy work around. Than I guess it would be best to just remove the option. I'm still trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Because i can't figure out how to load the custom.dat
