"playing defense" means that you wait for your opponent to make a mistake, but unfortunately the more  you play chess the more you notice that your opponent will not always make a mistake that you can capitalize. Offense is the best defence.

Well... usually when you play defense, it's not because you have a choice. It's because you have to.
