Of course. It is like learning to read and write. It opens all of chess history and theory to you.

That makes sense. I get the whole “battleship” notation, I’m just far from fluent at it and I know it’s gonna take a long time to acquire fluency. But I’d like to be able to read a Chess book, see the notation passages and be able to pretty much get them right away. I guess it’s like any language

It’s not that hard to master, so don’t worry. One thing it does help you with is thinking about your next move before actually playing it because you have it write it down first.
I love the English notation only. e4 is P to K4.
