Its told a lot that the caro kann is drawish and solid and the french is solid. Whats the difference?  Is the Queens gambit declined drawish or solid? Does solid mean good position but not much to play for?

Casual_Joe

To me solid is the opposite of "sharp".  But I don't know.  In my view, below master level, there is no such thing as a drawish opening.

Play openings you are comfortable. Don't bother with theories saying this opening is solid. drawish, double-edged, etc. In amateur chess, there is no drawish openings, middle games and endgames. Tactics and mistakes decides the game.

Solid is more of short term assessment of the position, synonym: safe at this moment.

Drawing is more of a long term assessment, synonym: not much going on in the future.

Solid is playing for a long term win, drawish is playing for a long term draw.
