It is most probable that most of the people here know about the difference in online chess rating and onboard rating. This is because onboard you can see and feel the pieces and it's simply much more fun than online match .you are much more aware onboard that where the pieces are ,they are defend or not ,getting attacked etc, rather in online chess you will not so attentive .Your views also.

For me I think that people will take an OTB game much more seriously. You sit in silence, alongside other boards, just ticking clocks, your real world rating at stake...

One can take online serious too, of course but for many of us it’s an online persona we could easily leave behind. I’ll often be playing whilst in the bath, on the bus, after a night out, in bed half asleep, trying not to be impolite to my partner...

Having been on chess.com for a while and made some observations, the biggest difference between OTB and online rating is OTB tend to stay with you while online can be changed anytime you wish.

For example, if you don't care for your current rating, you can always close that account and create a new one; with the way ELO works, your new account should have a better rating because you should have improved as a chess player.

But OTB rating is more difficult to change as you have to put in different names, address, birth dates, whatever. Plus it'll cost you a bunch of time and money to establish a rating too; like at least 5or 6 tournaments.
