I get it,.... however the A and H pawns cannot go in three directions, only two.

You are correct that the -a- and -h- pawns cannot go 3 directions, bbbbut if they exchange onto the b-file or the g-file then they can, so the power lays dormant until then.

Yep. The traditional chess symbols were not helping me to look at the "linear powers" of the pieces/pawns. Eyeball pathways.

Yea, that is true :)

Nice diagram though, the lines make perfect sense, (although it did take me a minute before I realised that the pawns didnt have arrows facing the wrong way! )

But.... if you say the pawns on the A and H files could then travel in three directions then I think all of the pawns should have the queens big multi directional cross as all pawns have the potential to become queens :)

see...now you're getting ahead of myself. Ha! That is something to consider though. The advance of the pawn leading to promotion IS part of every chess game right? or at least it is a threat in every game of chess.

right-o. i see that too. it might appear that those symbols for the pawns are wrong-way arrows, but that ain't right!

I thought also that you can promote pawns to knights giving them the side movement lines too, if you combine that with the queens lines then all pawns should look almost like cart wheels with a few gaps around the edge  Cool

At which point they cease to be pawns, right?  But, when the A or H pawn captures onto B or G they're still pawns.

Neat chart, though I, too, initially mistook the pawn symbols for arrows.

awesome!!! but how do you move them if they are only two dimentional. you have to cut them first, and them fold them in directionally simbological origami and stuff :)

Maybe disks with the symbols painted on like in Chinese chess?
