Hello
I have a question.
I played a lot of games where my opponent disconnects then reconnects. In a recent one, my opponent would frequently disconnect right after i made a move, reconnect and instantly move. I thought my opponent was checking an engine or something. It turned out he wasn't because I had better accuracy than him.
Nevertheless, I found it extremely unsettling. Chess.com kept telling me he's going to auto-abort in so and so seconds and the timer kept going down to the last seconds before he reconnected again. And because he kept reconnecting at the last second, in my mind, I had almost won the game, but he came back and it made me angry.
I know there's such thing as playing poorly due to overconfidence and anger.
In that game, I made a terrible blunder and I'm seriously thinking if it's because of that behaviour or not.
So my question is, do some players intentionally do this to get the psychological upper hand?
No. I think it means they have an unreliable internet connection.
/ It's easy to become suspicious but it's probably not a calculated strategy. It used to happen to me all the time when I played slower time controls. People would repeatedly disconnect and reconnect-- 20 times per game. And you used to have to wait out until the time control expired to get the win. Sometimes people who were dead lost would come back right before time expired to take advantage of people who had gone to a different window.
I haven't experienced one of those games in years. I think chess.com started using connection reliability as part of its matching algorithm.
