Disconnecting during a game

I don't mind waiting....it just seems unsportsmanlike and cowardly. Chess isn't about winning or losing. It's about learning from mistakes, and growing as a player. No one wins every game. We ALL lose from time to time....and those losses can be very helpful in making one a better player.
I'm trying to figure out why some folks disconnect when they see they're losing a game. Do you not understand if you abandon the game, it's the same as losing? You still lose your points. I'd have more respect for people if they play to the end, or resign. Disconnecting and abandoning the game is cowardly.
