Yeah, not a pattern worth remembering, just a pattern to admire.

I got it last night in a game, and was like, whoa.

whoa indeed

Yeah, I mean, it's symmetrical about the y=-x+8 axis, amiright?

It's like damn baby, you lookin' so mathematical.

hold up

how does slope work in this lmao

The super nerdy thing is I knew that equation was right, and came up with it in like... less than 5 seconds.

negative slope is just rotated 90 degrees... or maybe easier for you to imagine, they teach you "rise over run" in class or something right? Like a slope of 3/4 means you go:
up 3, right 4

well a negative slope you just make one of the numbers negative. So:
down 3, right 4
or
up 3, left 4
(either way it's the same).

Ha! They “teach” a lot of of things in school now, but rise/run isn’t one of them. i could mention the things being taught, but would likely end up muted or getting your thread locked.

They teach slope formula but I learned it as rise over run, and I have no clue what the slope formula is. When they ask me to find the slope of two points i just plot it on a pretend graph and look at rise/run

Perhaps in your school district. Certainly not taught in any of them around here. But i get your intent, it is elementary.

Now I don’t really care. This is entertainment to me. If there’s an outside chance that a likely unsound sacrifice will work, I’ll do it. I’d rather go down in flames giggling than be bored. I’ve been known to resign abruptly in a closed/drawn middle game because I’d rather go watch Netflix than shuffle pieces around. It’s a character flaw.

I'm almost the opposite. I error on the side of playing boring positions and winning in the endgame.

When I was a new player, I thought tactics were how little kids won against bad players. I thought "real" players won with strategy and endgames.

I was wrong because "real" players don't care how they win, they'll play any kind of position as long as it's good for them.

My style, on the other hand, is to play some provocative line that invites my opponent to attack me; and then exploit small flaws in his attacking technique to refute his attack and crush him with a counter-attack once his pieces are out of position for defense.

I did hear a few things here and there about Jason Repa being an idiot

I don't think I've ever had a regular opponent who had this as their preferred method. The old me finds it respectable because it's a long term strategy, but at the same time it requires playing sharp positions. So that's pretty interesting.

Yeah, and in general that a very Sicilian kind of strategy.
