First of all lets get you facts straight---it was 12 1/2  to 7 1/2.  Short won one game. Short was 26 when he played Karpov and Karpov was 41. Karpov  wasn't over the hill but was on a downward slide.

You say "Short took a while to get his win but not as long as Kasparov did in his first world championship match."

Karpov was in his prime in that match---it was close to being a skunk match---6-0.

That match in 93 was one of the most pathetic matches I have ever witnessed. Short was a bum!

Strange hills where you live huh?

Man, you are so lame. How about this---say something intelligent once in a while.

its the negative minded people who always degrade such thing.. Go sit and talk to them they'l fill you with negative talks. P.S. Nigel is just so..... *awesome*

Well said.  [Almost] everybody's a critic.  I have the impression the people mentioned in this quote derive some type of satisfaction from the very action of degrading.  Maybe at some point in time they can form their own community and the the rest of us can simply observe the outcome of such a community.  Or should I say the result?

Hey Spartecus---you want degrading. When a world title comtender degrades the game the way Short did in 93'---thats a good definition of degrading!

Pull your head out and breathe some fresh air---you're talking hogwash.

How about this Spartecus---I'll drop off this thread and let you and actor talk nonsense to your hearts content---what a conversation thats going to be!!!!!!!!!

SPARTANEMESIS

I'm honored that raul72 called me Spartacus, however I am not him.  And feel  free to drop off whenever.

If Short was so awful why didn't any of the other challengers beat him?

Short is guilty of only one thing: getting Rick-Rolled by the Fischer impersonator (who was actually my cousin).

Also, he invented the Short attack. Thats two things. I better stop.

There is obviously no question that Kasparov was significantly better than Short. But as Campione indicates Short had opportunities in the match to make it closer. I thought Short actually played fairly well in the match. Raul doesn't think much of Short - well I met Kasparov and I don't think much of him. However I recognize that few if any people care about my opinion.

My girlfriend cares about my opinion, but she sensibly has no interest in chess.

We're no strangers to love. You know the rules and so do I...

Benedictine

I love Nigel Short, great player and a nice chap.

Currently reading The Inner Game by Dominic Lawson about the '93 match vs Kasparov, excellent book.

Just found this on Youtube - a speed match Short Vs Kasparov from the 80s:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvjcrfs-Uk8

This game, Short Vs Timman, where Short's lone king wanders down the board (like a goal keeper who charges up the field in the last minutes of a game and scores in football) makes it into the World's Greatest Games of Chess Burgess, Nunn and Emms.

Disrespect to Kasparov at 3:10

the host talking to Kasparov:  You're a d**k go and play chess

WOW

Benedictine

Oh yes I missed that, ha, ha, but I wonder if the host meant it as that - he seemed to clip his speech at that point. I don't think you'd get a cheesy host such as that on air calling Kasparov a d**k.

Short is a legend! Here's one of my favourite games:

SPARTANEMESIS

Nice.

netzach

Short has an awkward-personality that doesn't always endear himself towards others.

Tell you what though. He is a brilliant, brilliant, chess-player! (Most of his fellow-professionals would agree on that.)

Shakaali

I believe Short was the highest rated english player only few years back ahead guys like McShane and Adams so clearly he isn't playing that badly even these days. At his peak only the two K's vere clearly better than him. Being inferior to two of the very best chess players of all times doesn't make Short weak.

Besides being a fantastic player he is also highly entertaining chess journalist (has written to NIC among others) and good game commentator as I last witnessed when following the live  commentary on the official site of the London Chess Classic.

One thing I've noticed is that he doesn't shy away from confrontation or speaking his mind and among othe things prefers to spice his stories with juicy anecdotes. All of these things can also bring him enemies inside chess world and make him seem arrogant for outsiders - but it's also part of what makes him so great.

Anyway, Apart from outright trolls internet forums in general are mostly filled with strong opinions based on poor knowledge leading to unconstructive arguments. No point worrying what's said about Short there.

CaptainScarlett

Nigel Short is a hero. He single-handedly put British Chess on the world map, and his WCC against the mighty Kasparov was the ONLY time chess has ever been televised in the UK, to my knowledge.  He is also very likeable, witty and individualistic, unlike many GMs.  People might criticize him for ill-advised remarks in his time, but hey- he who casts the first stone eh?  To call anyone who has consistently played at 2700-plus is a right and privilege reserved only for some incredible players.  Then again they know better, and have some class- as does Nigel.

gaereagdag

The disrespect for Short is a conspiracy that was started by the milky bar kid. Nigel Short stole the milky bar kid's looks and has received wrath for it ever since.

aman_makhija

Short will win, shortly, and not for a short time!

arul_kumar

Short is not short of well wishers!

IMT_2

Short is subject for much ridicule because he speaks his mind and people in general don't accpet somebody who has a voice. Whether you agree with him or not it is a matter of perception but nobody can deny that this man has courage to speak for what he feels is right, he is witty and he has been a great great player. ..
