I'll be honest with you, if you're going to spend 5 hours a day on something, it had better be something that you can actually get good at or at least have a lot of fun with. Raging because you work for several hours on chess and just tilted down to 1100 (again) is not fun. But chess is probably one of the best hobbies you can have. It develops the mind, gets you in contact with other intelligent individuals (more or less) - I'd certainly rather be playing chess than going to parties and drinking!

And you really don't need to spend 5 hours a day on chess to improve - even as little as half an hour a day is enough, provided that you're actually learning something. If you're playing it because it gives you enjoyment, play away, just don't let it take over your life. And if you're trying to learn and get better, just remember that quality >> quantity.

I agree with everything Guinea said

btw Viznik 50 pounds is nothing, I'm quite weak and scrawny and I can do 100 pounds without too much trouble

Asking whether you can lift 50 lbs is a common question for entry level jobs like walmart, fast food, etc.

I had a fair amount of improvement just by watching a youtube video or two before bed every day

Granted that was when I was like 1300, but still

i mean obviously its not the best but its something, just look at me

Look at you?

I mean... do you really want me to?

Do you really want me to look through your game history and point out days where you spent more than 30 minutes playing?

And then on top of it ask you what you do to "study" (like watching youtube videos, solving puzzles, or whatever)

And then you want me to add that up and show you how it's much more than 30 minutes a day?

I haven't even clicked on your profile, so maybe I'm wrong, but if you really want me to...

Depends on your innate talent of course, but you can probably reach at least 1400 on half an hour a day if you're following the right study plan.

Now if you want to become a GM, well, that's a different story...

Sure, a beginner will improve, but OP is 1700 rapid.

I don't know if 30 minutes a day is enough, maybe it is, but I doubt it.

I just want to say that it's not about how many hours you put into chess but how you spend those hours. This may already be obvious to you but I feel that some people put too much emphasis on quantity rather than quality.

As for how many hours you have to put in order to improve in chess? If all you are looking for is improvement in chess, I believe that at the bare minimum, 1-2 hours with a mix of play and studying chess is all that is required to improve. If you are aiming for a higher goal like becoming a titled player, then maybe 4-5 hours of play and study is required. However, I am not close to being a titled player so take it that advice with a grain of salt.

Ultimately, it depends on your what you want and how much time you are willing to spend on chess. Simply choose on what suits you and your needs, then you should be fine.

Well, currently I want to improve at least 100 to 150 uscf points a year, preferably more. I will try to do at least 4 hours of useful practice a day (games and studying). I just don't want to feel sort of empty if I don't do the full 4 hours a day.

Definitely not. There is no way that 30 minutes a day if enough, no matter who it is.

Right. You'll stand around at 20 with nothing to discuss or show for your life but Chess. While still being rated 1130 USCF lol. See how far that gets you guys in today's world.

My passion would be to become a chess coach so in my case studying chess is the only way to get there

You do realize that simply being a chess coach won't provide you with even a fraction of the amount of income you need to live above the poverty line, don't you? How are you going to cloth and feed yourself? Pay rent, car insurance, gas, etc? Not by coaching chess, I can assure you of that. Especially not in today's realm of massive inflation.

Tbh as long as I can make $1000  a month I can make it work

ok champ even I gotta admit that's a little too stretched lol

Maybe it is but as long as I'm single, living in a van I think $1000 a month isn't to crazy if I'm cheap

dude u gotta save up for retirement otherwise you'll be working for the rest of your life..... tbh even minimum wage isn't enough if you live in a semi-big city

I mean, the main rating I want to improve in is USCF cuz that's the one that actually matters (and FIDE but I don't have a FIDE rating).

Not like you know anything about work, money, relationships, or the world around you. But hey - that bullet rating's looking good. Absolutely pathetic to the point of even sad lol.

So are you working on the cure for cancer? If so, what are you doing here?

ok cmon ik hes being a bit obnoxious but even doctors deserve some breaktime
