Do We Really Need To Resign ?

As far as "respect" goes, I believe that is in the perception of the person sitting accross the board. One may take it as a sign of "respect" to resign while another would take it as a sign of "respect" to allow the checkmate. The person sitting accross the board may have quite the opposite outlook. Deciding which would be perceived as respectful is a rock and a hard place and one that you always have a 50/50 chance of getting right. I'd say that it would be in the manner in which each action is taken whether or not one would perceive one or the other as respectful or otherwise.

I recently finished a game where I had a King and Rook. Checkmate is inevitable. I certainly wish that my opponent would had simply resigned and allowed me to move on to the next game. His position was unwinnable against anyone who understands this very basic checkmate and the next 4 or 5 moves would demonstrate whether or not the opponent understands the principle.

To me, if your objective is to win, it is pointless to continue a game where checkmate is inevitable. I resign, send a trophy and get on with my life.

Thanks, but it still doesn't make sense. So what if goldendog is here for the forums and doesn't play?

And why is sour patch using his very first post ever on this site to be rude to kco?

Trolls are everywhere. Best to ignore them. They're not going to go away until they get bored, and the best way to bore them is to ignore them.

Must've trigger the alarm off for the mod.

But the best way to enjoy them is to feed them.

I guess. One of the fastest bans I've ever seen.

I'd forgotten why I avoid these forums. Thanks for reminding me.

Yeah, fun and whimsy sucks, doesn't it?

Resignation is like bankruptcy; necessary but not desirable. No, it's nothing like bankruptcy. It's more like unconditional surrender where the loser relinquishes all ...no, that's not right either. A lottery ticket? A court summons? A notarized item of correspondence? I'm afraid I got nothing.

Resignation is like giving up.

Yeah, posting in the forums while actually in the forums. How strange.

Now, if I ever hang around live chess and refrain from playing, I'll consider entertaining your "observations."

Until then, go tap a hammer, chango.

(No idea what that means, but let's give him something to think on.)

A sockpuppet doesn't need to know when to resign... its all taken care of for them.
