Like sand in the hourglass, these are the days of the people who have no lives...

I think you should ask that question yourself first.

wiebelenstra

Asking the question myself first ?

I play 10 minute games and I play maybe one game in a week. And sometimes a tournament.

That's why I cannot understand those who play 109 games at the same time. So I myself cannot answer that question. I'm also playing reasonably well but not addicted. Why others are ?

xtophr1

Some people play on their smartphones and are immediately notified of a move. These players are not shown as being online so they're kind of like stealth players. So they're not just sitting around on their computer waiting for moves.

I am in 8th grade and have lots of homework, so I only have around 15 minutes each day to check on my email and my chess.com online games.

Boy am I glad I didn't have to go to school in China.

To the OP:

A lot of people who play 5-day time limit actually make about a move per day.  It's not difficult to get your average time per move down to about 4-6 hours, if you only play a dozen games or less.  This is because you can give conditional moves.  Also opening and forced moves can be played back and forth quickly.

Also, take into account, from a probability standpoint, a certain percentage of your opponents will be online at the same time you are.  It's not unreasonable to think that at times 20 out of 109 are online over an hour or two-hour period that you're on.

ogichidaag

You wouldn't necessarily have to carry a computer around with you, but a lot of people have smart phones these days with the chess.com app.

109 games seem alot to me....

ogichidaag

Makes me wonder what the record is for most games in progress at a single time.

fissionfowl

I know on this site someone called aniko had over 3000 games ongoing at one point.
