Do you believe that a chess player can only go a certain amount and then cant get better?

like for example they get like 1600 rating but then they just cant get better at chess so they stay around 1600 rating?

hmmmm....I've often wondered that myself.

I'm sure anyone can improve if they put their mind to it, but some people do get stuck!

Good question!

Yeah i know alot of people that played chess for more than 5 years but are still around 1600 rating while i played for a year and im at 1700ish rating!

so i always wonder, because one day im probably gonna get stuck at like 1800 and i wont be able to get better.. because im not smart? mayeb :P

Yes, I believe that each person can only achieve a certain rating. What that rating is depends on certain factors, like calculating ability, training, and time.

Just for the record, I think that most everyone can at least become an expert (2000 ELO). Any further than that would require more time than most people can use.

The limiting factor is mainly related with brain capacity (brain cells stop multiply in early childhood) and the number of games you play. Want to increase your rating? Reduce the number of games you play. Even GMs will not be play at their top form if they play gazillions of simul games.

IM David Pruess is currently playing only 3 simuls, GM Becerra only 20.

Thanks for your imput guys!

i agree that it is not a good thing to think about this but yeah i dont know how far i can reach before i know my limit, im worrying that i reached the furthest i can!

I dont understand one thing - people will continue to play 1-2 dozen simul games, and gripe their rating is not increasing! In order to increase your rating, you have to think DEEPLY, and you cannot do that if you play 1-2 dozen games! Mental speed x available time / number of simul games you are playing is the limiting factor. Try to learn from IM dpruess - he is currently playing only three!!

eventually someone cant improve.. with a lot of hard work, most people will probably be able to get to upper 1900s. Fewer people will be able to get 2200s+, fewer 2500+, even with a ton of hard work
