Yes --- but then I am a radio person from way back ( we did not own TV back in the 1950's ). At 8 AM my radio come on ( radio-alarm set to radio only ) and I've got a radio of some sort going until Midnight, either on AM stations or on Satellite. Sometimes I like Early Rock, or Jazz, or Blues, or Classical, etc etc. So much Music, so little time  lol.

What a great piece that is! There's a cool breeze finding it's way to me...squirrels are battling over the nuts I put in the yard...and that great "Take Five" is inspiring me in some blitz games on FICS...great day!

This is my favorite Dave Brubeck song:

Great songSmile

You know that it was not written by Dave Brubek, it was written by his bass player,(something) Desmond.

My opinion, enjoying a good smoke (cigarrillo or pure blach tobacco) together with a good drink (I prefer good red wines) and at the same time enjoying good sounds/music, that enhances my 'feeling' for playing good chess, in the blinck of an eye (Blitz talking here). Sometimes, when I play chess (Blitz) in the mornings, sipping black coffee, then I play my worst games making some blunders. But the above only represents my very personnal opinion on this subject.

I myself favour the sounds of Enigma in the nights, while playing some chess (headphone on, loud, great), but I also value the music mentioned by others above. OTB tournaments, so dull, no music, no smokes and an opponent luring at you all the time, so cold, I prefer the comfortable games at home, such is real enjouyment (+the smokes+the good music!!!)Smile

Try drinking wine in the morning.

No, that I do not do, the wines are for the evenings and nights, to keep all balanced. Anyway,I never mind loosing any game, it's all for enjoyment for both players, fun

Yes, the world is changing fast, for the worse that is. Soon as from now legislation will prohibit people going on risky vacationes, since they could break a leg or so,what to think about all this.

I learned the chess when i was very young in a very big chess-club, people drinking, smoking and some brilliant players present, people having fun! Nowadays? Tell me.

Times have changed.Btw, I was never a professional player (no money in that), but must say, I allways had real talent for the game, love it.

Nowadays I much more like to play chess on a good chess-site (from time to time), and this is the best site there is! Simple as that. I from time to time conduct some Blitz (3-5 min), enjoying my drinks and good smokes, that I do enjoy, together with listening some good music!! OTB cannot provide such to me,my girl-friend asking me:' how late will you be back home???' if you understand me.

So, the future of chess is internet, not OTB, maybe later with WEB-Cam control, I do not know, but times have changed.

I wouldnt love to promote alcohol and cigarretes but in my opinion, chess, boems, alcohol and cigaretes goes together. Many years ago people were playing chess in caffee bars, now not any more.I dont see reason why not.Maybe because times totally changed.Today in caffee bars are people who usually talk empty. No any more, old real boems.Smart people who loved bottle, speak little, talk much.

Such a 'real to the point!' comment you gave! Compliments for that. When I was young I played games of chess in bars and cafees (also billiards, for that matter), friends present (hoping me to win,for the drinks!Smile), yes, times have changed.

I don't play as well with music (by the way,  Hendrix was/is the best) but mixing the music (Robert Johnson, blues, eg.) with the chess makes it more fun.  Isn't that what it's all about...?

beardogjones

It depends on what you mean by "listen", "playing" , "music" and "chess"....

Thanks, OP!  Great topic...

Well, must say Jimmy H was legendary, but we alo have Slash of Guns N Roses, also legendary. About listening music while playing chess in the blinck of an eye, well, people differ, not all are same, some like quiteness, so I fully agree with you. It all depends on peoples genes(!), yes I agree. I myself play headphone on, fast, not even analysing anymore, just playing on experience and pure feeling, I love that, such makes it beautifull.
