I mention chess to everyone I talk to. Chess is the most exciting game that's ever been invented. Most people enjoy chess, and even the people who don't play it have a respect for it.
I don't mention it on a date unless specifically asked for my hobbies.

If youre on a date and they ask about your hobbies, then yes chess gets mentioned. If youre on a date and hobbies never gets brought up, that dates not going anywhere. Also, if youre embarassed to bring up chess as a hobby, then youre probably in highschool.

On my first date with my wife, chess probably came up. The date was on Friday night and I played in a tournament that weekend. I called her between rounds four and five on Sunday.
It was the worst tournament of my life. I lost all five games. My wife always lets me play in that tournament every year, now, because she knows that she owes me for my 0-5 performance after our first date.

I'd wait until you're at the same stage as being comfortable farting around her to bring up chess. By then, she's unlikely to let that be a deal killer.
I think most girls are not into guys who play chess or video games. That being said, are you interested in that type of girl?
What if the girl mentioned first that SHE played chess? How would you react? What if she was better than you?

I've mentioned chess to my girlfriend a few times, and then the conversation gets changed to something else pretty quickly lol. She has "zero" interest on the topic.
Do you mention that you play chess to girls? I never used to until this one time I was at a party talking to this girl when another person came up and was like "Hey you're the chess guy!" (i'm president of a club) and the girl thought that was really cool and it started a great conversation afterwards.
