I have a similar experience. While playing against people with lower ratings, I try to set up more traps and attack plans, hoping for them to fall for it or fail to defend properly. Usually the opponent notices it and slaps me harder on the face. Playing against higher elos, I overthink their move, even over-estimating their blunders, missing a good chance to change the winning odds. My rating is still horrible, but I am also hoping this to improve by not looking at opponents rating.
Do you play differently depending on your opponents rating?

Your opponent's rating should never come into play. You'll only develop bad habits by playing moves that you hope will not be noticed by a much lower rated opponent. You must always try to find the correct move. That is the only way you will improve your game.

Against lower rated players in games beginning 1 e4 e5, I'll tend to play the Vienna Game or Bishop's Opening, move a pawn to f4 by the 6th move and, if I get the right position, O-O-O then pawn-storm his K-side. Against better players I'll concentrate more on overprotection and not trying to drop a piece - which is how most games are lost.
Hi guys, I recently noticed that my play in blitz games (3 or 5 minutes) is sometimes effected when I see my opponents rating. When someone is rated 100 or so points lower than me, I often get complacent, over-attack and make careless blunders. Alternatively against higher ranked players I often find myself playing too defensively or overthinking and second-guessing myself so that I end up running out of time.
I started making a conscious effort to ignore opponents ratings by just not looking and it has actually made me a lot more consistent. I find I am less complacent against lower ranked players and less intimidated by higher ranked players. Has anyone else found the same to be true?
