Does anyone else think Bartholomew is very rude?

I was following him when he had only 200 subs. I’ve enjoyed watching his vids and sharing in the highs and lows. However, since his company got bought over from Magnus he has basically shown the middle finger to everyone that made him what he is. Without us watching and going to his site he would be a nobody, a bum.

He hit 100k nearly a month ago, this is a HUGE deal for youtubers and fans but does he even mention it? Nope. Doesn’t even bother to make a video thanking us for getting him the silver plaque.

It was with a heavy heart that i unsubbed from his channel today.

Do you follow him on Twitter? He does regular updates there about what he is currently working on and replies to tweets.

His twitter alias is @fins0905.

I don't have twitter bit just checked it out.

It's what I was dreading. The success has gone to his head and it's all "me me me" now.

At least we still have Kingscrusher I guess.

Really?!  You're offended just because someone doesn't do some special video for 100k subs?!  It's just a number at the end of the day.  Whether someone appreciates their viewers or not comes from so many other things.  I've never watched him so wouldn't have a clue, just seems a ridiculously odd reason to get aerated about.

TakeThisPawn

I just feel he's kinda sold out tbh.

YouTube isn’t the bag of roses it used to be for the Youtubers who create content on the platform.

It is true that most of the content John Bartholomew makes is behind a paywall but then he puts in a lot of work to produce such high quality content. The content isn’t high quality because of editing or special effects but by his ability to teach through distance learning. Nearly all distance learning professionals ply their trades through companies that pay good returns. So I would argue why shouldn’t John?

I haven’t signed up to Chessable simply because I can’t justify the costs - same as I haven’t paid a subscription to Chess.com for the same reason.

I don’t begrudge the fact I can’t afford to watch his best content (nor afford Chess.com’s best content) but I am grateful for the quality content they did decide to make open access.

Chess fundamentals and Climbing the Ratings Ladders are two very good series that John did decide to make open access - content that he could have put behind a paywall.

I agree with Rubicon. I first clicked on this forum topic because I thought John was literally being rude. If he didn't make a 100k sub video, who cares? Perhaps he wants to wait until 500k. As long as the content is informative, he's doing what he should.

TakeThisPawn

He's not doing what he should though.

He has uploaded 1 video on youtube in 3 months. Not even acknowledged the 100k milestone. Now he is a millionaire it's like he no longer cares.

Tja_05

1) 100k subs is far from a millionaire 2) It takes a long time to create a YouTube video.

TakeThisPawn

He sold chessable for $3.2million

You're complaining about the 100k subs part.

He can upload videos as often as he likes.  He gets money, presumably, from people watching his videos.  I don't know much about how YouTube works, but as far as I'm aware you don't earn money just from having subs.  So if he isn't releasing videos he isn't earning money except from people watching his old videos.  So it's his choice.  Maybe he's busy with other things.  Subs are not fixed income, they can unsubscribe too if they decide they no longer want to be a sub.  I've unsubscribed from plenty of twitch channels because they no longer stream what I'm interested in or as often as I'd like.  It's a fluid business.

More and more content creators are reserving their best content for platforms such as Patreon and only posting videos to YouTube when those videos have done their run on Patreon. Therefore Youtube viewers see a less consistent flow of videos.

I don’t think John ever set out to chase Subscriber figures and I don’t think he ever needed the income from Youtube. He simply wanted to put up videos that budding chess players would find useful.

He even remarked in the comment section of one of his own videos about a chess computer he used to play against early in his chess career, that the video wasn’t even popular until suddenly the YouTube algorithm started pushing it years later. It wasn’t important to John how many people found his videos helpful - it was something he put there for people to take or leave as they please.

@bartholomew

hukes

He posts videos on youtube for free. Who should be thankful?

markkoso

probably the least "rude" chess streamer.

TakeThisPawn

Every youtuber does a 100k special. Look at agadmator for example.

mbereobong

Agreeing with RedGirlz. Just because someone doesn’t acknowledge that they reached 100k subs doesn’t really say anything about their personality.

2Late4Work

I thought it was nearly impossible to dislike JB. He is so humble and always friendly. I think he already explained that he wouldn't make a deal out of 100 K subs since he meant it didn't matter much, but he was still happy about it.
