awusick, it is just one of the mysteries of chess that we have good and bad streaks. I think many factors play into it. Stay active and your success rate will improve (your rating too). But there will always be hot streaks and bad streals. Atleast that is my experience.

Did Kasparov ever lose 2 games in a row ?
I was 779 about 9 days ago and now I'm 1059, I find that the inability to concentrate at certain point of time made me lose some games in a streak.I think I'll either take a break, drink caffeine+sugar or do things to increase my heartbeat rate before playing again when I can't concentrate
Then there's always the luck factor, people with new accounts start at 1200 so it's possible to be matched up against them few times in a row and get inflated rating out of it
I definitely experience peaks and valleys of performance. I've only started playing chess with some degree of seriousness since December, not too long, and I'm slowly beginning to remember patterns that I had "down" when I was in college. Rating going up slowly, but yes - there are times when I just lose and lose and lose...
This sounds like sucha cliche, but you should focus on enjoying the mental excercise and forget about the numbers.

Definitely a game of streaks. Like you, I find that I often do better against higher rated players. I'm finally learning to enjoy playing without thinking about numbers....I'll never be a gm anyway, and besides, who REALLY cares besides me. Not my wife. She'd prefer that I give it up entirely... I'd highly recommend doing Tactics Trainer problems. It has really improved my game. Being 58 and a relative novice, it's taking time to get the speed part of it down.
I am not a very good chess player and at a time this february i was actually struggling with ratings of 800+ when all of a sudden i started winning matches mostly against those with higher ratings than myself and got all the way to 1100+ in a very short time which is very obvious seeing as this month is not yet gone.
I later started loosing more than i won and against those of a lower rating than myself talk less of those with the same rating and more till i found myself at 1013 on the verge of going back to 900+.This was when i started winning once again till i was up to 1154.
Yet again i started a downward trail that took me to 1080 before climbing back to 1110.
The only excuse i have been able to come up with is that it happens to everyone so is it just me or.....?you may share your experiences
