Does Magnus deserve to be world champion? Why or why not?

I'm curious about this answer from an ethical perspective, although metaphysical enquiries are also of course welcome!

Well, depends how are you asking.

If you are asking is he realy the strongest player in the world: probably, yes.

If you are asking is he having a good style for audience: No. Nowadays everyone likes risks, agerssive openings, without much theory.

Thanks for both for metaphysical and ethical responses!!!

Yes, i think, according to modern, "he is the strongest player in the world."

However, i don't think if chess doesn't exist you cannot be the strongest player in it!

On your ethical note, i agree and diasgaree. No is my answer, but the audience loves him, i think. i just think he plays out of guilt, feeling indebted to his fans, which is unethical

This reminds me of those threads stating Anand shouldn't have been entitled to play Carlsen again for the WC. I even remember a guy saying Ivanchuk doesn't deserve to be a 2700...

No, of course. Magnus Carlsen plays dumb chess. He never creates good games. His most memorable wins have come after pushing pawns in equal endgames until his opponents blundered in time trouble.

He would never actually become world champion if FIDE didn't come up with the dumbest tie breaker of all times in London, where big Vladimir Kramnik won the candidates but the FIDE stole his right to play for the title.

Fortunately, Carlsen will be soon spanked by younger and more talented players like Wei Yi, Robin van Kampen, Fabiano Caruana and Dmitri Andreikin.

He proved he deserved it by beating Anand.
