Yes the conventional wisdom going back at least a handful of decades is that too much blitz can introduce a superficiality into your longer games.
Does playing blitz mess with your real chess game?
I think it differs from player to player. True for some, neutral for some, and the complete opposite for some.
If i've got a tournament coming up, i don't play blitz. i think it hurts you chess.
With all due respect, I think the only people that can truly answer that question are masters and other people who are much stronger than me or most of the people in the world. For all the rest of us humans, whether or not we play blitz doesn't make that much of a difference.
"Does playing blitz chess reverse or erase all the chess strategy and way of thinking put into a real match"
The same implied question: Does playing chess make you worse at playing chess?
I don't buy the argument that just because you play fast that it will somehow impair you from playing it...slower. I think most people play blitz for fun and the longer time controls or as you say "real chess" they will take more seriously than a quick game.
Considering, I'm sure that the things learned from past experience, be it from a book, a video, a teacher or from playing will carry over and will add something of value to the player, instead of taking anything away. And when it comes to bad habits I would say that is psychological and is outside of the chess altogether.
The more quick games I play the worse my long game is and visa-versa. Since my long game's generally better and more enjoyable for me that's where I focus my time.
I have been contemplating this idea recently. Does playing blitz chess reverse or erase all the chess strategy and way of thinking put into a real match. I know that blitz can be considered a real match, I just mean longer games (which is in my mind 'real chess').
So what do you all think?
yes... plain and simple.
I dont see anny problems with blitz vs "real chess" as long as you know when to do what.
Think like a blitzplayer while you play blitz, and use your time when you have it. (long games)
Evrybody should know that whats works fine in a blitz game, could be a disaster in a long game. So dont use cheap trics when your opponent have the time to figure it out, and dont think long and deep when you are in timetrouble...
Question to the people that answered yes...so does tactics trainer and chess mentor actually make you worse?
Absolutely not -- they're focused and targetted and you know that there's a tactic to be had so you know that concentrating on finding the combination will bear fruit.
In a blitz game even if I do identify the conditions for a combination I often don't have good enough time management to calculate it properly and leave enough time to see the rest of my game through.
In a long game, missing the combinations or threats that are relatively safe to miss in Blitz on the other hand can be fatal. Generally speaking I find that blitz is too forgiving of mistakes and can foster sloppiness in my play that gets punished in longer games.

As long as you know what you are doing, this should not be a problem, I like blitz, but for me it's not real chess, blitz is just fun, real chess is hard work!
It's nice to relax with some blitz games, but I never take it to serious.
I never expect that my game would actually worsen through playing blitz games. I always assumed that playing blitz games would improve my assessment of a game because in a fast game that's what you need to do.
At chess.com I only play turn base games (3-14 days per move) & when I play Live Chess it's 1 min (+5 secs). I never even play 5 min games because I can't be bothered. My rating here for turn base games is fairly steady so I don't see that the fast games are badly affecting my main playing.
Maybe if I had time to play OTB I'd find a difference.
It's an interesting idea. If only some charitable institute would donate lots of money to an aspiring PhD Psychology student maybe we'd discover lots about chess that we don't currently know.
I have been contemplating this idea recently. Does playing blitz chess reverse or erase all the chess strategy and way of thinking put into a real match. I know that blitz can be considered a real match, I just mean longer games (which is in my mind 'real chess').
So what do you all think?
Dunno about erasing everything, but it definitely hurts my long games to play blitz.

How?
Question to the people that answered yes...so does tactics trainer and chess mentor actually make you worse?
You're comparing apples to oranges. How can playing a complete game in a couple minutes be compared to solving a 2-move puzzle with time to think about it?
My answer to you would be no, tactics trainer and chess mentor don't make you worse.
On the other hand, compared to some of the real live players who have given me tips relevant to my playing weaknesses, tactics trainer and chess mentor really haven't helped my game much.

What is wrong with your games, and why do you think blitz is the one to blame?

How?
I guess in blitz, I don't have time for deep, calculated moves that trap my opponent 5 or 6 moves down the line. As a result, I forget how to calculate.
Whatever the cause, when I started playing blitz and quick games, my long rating soon dropped by about 150 points.
If you feel it necessary to tear a strip off me for my playing style, feel free to message me. I can tell you ahead of time that I'll never be a great chess player.

I solve puzzles to "learn" how to calculate, that helps me in my blitz and long games, play blitz for fun not for training!
