"Don't Lose On Time"

I started a thread recently about my grade being much higher at 3+0 than at 2+1:

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/livechess/my-grade-is-much-higher-at-3-0-than-2-1

I have been thinking about this a lot and now have an answer I am happy with. It's because my mental attitude is “don't lose on time” rather than “play to win”. I win a good proportion of my 3+0 games on time but such wins happen much less frequently at 2+1 because my opponents have that extra second per move, regardless of how long the game is. This is, I think, the main cause of my much lower grade for 2+1.

Another effect of that “don't lose on time” attitude is that the games become more reactive and tactical rather than strategically planned. So, I intend to try and focus more on playing a strategy to win the game rather than just to not make any bad moves more quickly than my opponent does. In the long term this must make me a better player and, as a result, my grade at both time controls should improve.

What do you think, does this make sense?

Yes, very good. I saw your other topic but didn't bother to reply. The reasoning you've given here should have been the first response in your other topic. I guess those people aren't experienced with such time controls.

Thank you. I think I will probably play far fewer games at the no increment time controls now too.

Also, if you're behind on time but ahead in material, take all his mating material so you can do no worse than a draw.  The other day I took a guy's last remaining pawn with a queen, he recaptured with his king, and I was able to queen another pawn just barely fast enough to beat him.

Good point, thanks for making it. I have lost like that before and it's frustrating.

Fine by me but my advice is , once or twice  a week play a long time control game. You will become really good fast player if you become an overall better player.

Thankyou for the advice, and I really appreciate the time you spent looking ay my games.  I will try some longer games.
