As ivandh said, it has to be claimed.
To clarify, in this case your opponent must have been ready and pressed the draw button to claim the draw as soon as you made your move. In the previous games, if neither player claimed it, then the game would, should, and did continue.

I just had a game draw by repetition immediately upon the position repeating 3 times in the endgame. This is the first time I've ever seen it. However, in past games... I've attempted to trigger the draw by reptition, only to have my opponents repeat the identical position over 10+ times and run me out on time. Up until this game, I had simply assumed the function didn't work due to my experiences.
Why wasn't the draw by repetition triggered in other events?
