No real chessplayer ever draws by repetition. And they never resign either.

I recently played someone who i was on the verge of beating but they kept checking my king with their queen, and it was in a corner so i could only move it to one spot, then back.

His reasoning was "you had a better chance of winning, so i should draw you"

Am i the only one that thinks that forced draws by a losing party shouldn't be allowed?  They seem unsportsmanlike and unethical.

What do you think?

Truly, I believe that it is one of the most beautiful things in chess. That is, to see a game that should have been won snatched away to a draw or a win for the other player. The way I see it is like this: If you have been given draw by perpetual check, it is your own fault (not to be mean or anything) and the position is drawn, regardless of what the rest of the board looks like. This draw is actually my motivation to play on in some of my games.

If I'm losing I try to achieve stalemate.  My main concern with 3 fold rep isn't pulling it off, its trying to avoid leaving it as an option for my opponent.

Perpetual check is a rather useful tool when considering a sacrificial attack. If you can calculate that you will have a perpetual, you can happily sacrifice and see if you can find something better in a few moves, safe in the knowledge you have the draw in hand.

"Good, so you're aware of the alternatives to playing games with the three-fold repetition rule.  I suggest you go play those instead of suggesting chess be more like them."

I wasn't suggesting that the rules of chess should be changed.

"So... not a draw then?"

If it's perpetual check - not a draw

If it's some other kind of repetition, where checks aren't invoved - draw.

LoneWolfEburg, what do you think  the result of the game should be in the case of perpetual check?

And how does it being anything but a draw equate to "not suggesting that the rules of chess should be changed"?

Hi guys,

We have rules so that players dont have to argue about them. The rules of chess are clear on draws by three time repetition. There are good reasons why we allow draws by three time repetition.  These have been clearly outlined in previous posts.  So, a draw by three time repetition is neither unsportsmanlike or unethical.

Watch your backrank.

I don't think there's harm in discussing them or questioning them -- it's good to get some perspective on the rationale behind many of them and often the best way to do that is to ask.

If the JR18 game is the basis for this discussion then Black should have offered a draw and White should take it because Black has the better endgame.  Once the Queens are off , Black 's connected  a and b pawns and Bishop should be enough to win.

As for the draws by three fold repetition of a position... Bobby Fischer one of the greatest fighting chess players in history had no problem doing it against Trigran Petrosian in the 1960s.
