Dream to be a National Master

What I mean is that ambitions that includes  a lot faster improvement than realistic means that the goals will not be reached on schedule, and that might be a disappointment you dont deserve when the progress actually is very fine.

I'm 17 but I think you can get NM if you work hard enough. At 16 it should be NO problem!

I agree with Desty_Nova.  I got to 2170 USCF in 1987 and then quit playing because I was stressed out over my rating (and it is really easy to lose points when your rating is that high!)  I'm trying to make a comeback now (rating 1933, up from 1800 in 1.5 years) and still interested in the NM title, but I'm trying to focus on playing well and not getting obsessive over rating.  If the skills are there the rating will follow.

I played the game of my life last August against a strong 2100, so I think there is still hope for me--if not reaching 2200, at least playing some fine games and enjoying them.  (Awesome game, both players sacking, both Kings very unsafe--a total adrenaline rollercoaster.  Even if I'd lost that would have been a good game.)

Good thing at least you have a weak title.

um..... IM is much harder to get then FM

DivineDestruction

It's certainly possible dude.I was 1600 when I was 16.I'll be turning 18 in a few days and have a FIDE rating of 2012 and pretty optimistic about breaking 2200 this year.Just have confidence, work hard and don't let anyone tell you that you can't make it.

andyquibler

I want to break 2300 fide (FM) this year. current (2126)

16 is definitely young enough!

As Pfren likes to point out sometimes, if you want to improve, it's best to have systematic training.

odisea777

if you want to give up everything else and just study chess, maybe...

When I was 16 I was going to school, playing video games, and watching cartoons. Giving up "everything else" isn't really giving up anything at all lol.

In any case, it usually doesn't take more than a few hours a day with the right training (and if the person can do it in the first place).

Good for you RandomBean! I don't mind being the "bottom rung" of the title ladder.

@ab121715, I have summer break with about 16 hours a day. 6 of which I will be doing various jobs. 10 of which I have time to do what I want :) I have plenty of time to do other things too.

@divineDestruction, wow that's great! I'll try to start catching up.

@andyquibler, Simply inspiring that you have such a high skill level at my age. Good luck with reaching 2300!

EDIT:  I now see it was from the 1500 Women.

Why cant men also get titles for being 1500?

As far as I know no one gets titles for being 1500.  WCM is 2000 FIDE, WFM is 2200.  I don't take these titles enormously seriously, but hey, free membership....

Little letters in front of your name is not such a big deal.  Being able to play well is really rewarding.  (Not that I play all that well yet.  But it's still more fun than where I started.)

I enjoy golf. One of the seductive aspects of the game is anyone who is not completely awful will have at least one or maybe three shots a game that any pro would be happy with. Say 80 yards out and you leave the ball a foot from the pin with a wedge.

Difference is the pros make those shots 99% percent of the time - not three a round.

god bless you my son.

Wow, didnt know you got a free membership. I am getting the CM title right now lol

What's your name so we can look you up in FIDE's list?

You will get it soon because you are very motivated

I think its a very reasonable goal, especially for a younger person. At any rate, it sounds better then 1200 rated players swearing they will be a GM someday. But who am I to say what anyone else will or will not do? My chess goal is to reach 1800 OTB before I die lol

2200 is my goal as well. I am 1871, 17 years old, and a damn hard worker at this game. Believe me, it's hard. I gained 700 rating points in one year to go from 1100 to 1800, and then had a whole year's worth of plateauing before finally starting to approach 1900 in the last two months. I hope I'm not too old to get there.

At 17 I had not played any rated chess yet and didnt until age 20 and I made it to 2200 so you are certainly NOT too old to do it .  I also wasnt in an area with as much chess activity as you are .

Actually I think the road from 1800 to 1900 is ca the same lenght as 1100 to 1800. You are  doing well. I think more results will come with more otb-tournamentplay against strong players.
