I was at www.chesshouse.com,and Elliott Neff has a chess course on DVD,and also they offer Romans Lab on DVD about 30 DVDs  that I can get

HAs any body ever used them can tell me what they think?  I'm rated at 1630  and I have not played for about 12 years.

what are you guys hoping to learn about from watching a dvd, and do you need a dvd that doesn't run on a computer?

dannyhume

Books and software much better than DVDs I agree.

In the thread I started (see link above), I personally was looking for motivation to exercise on my elliptical (because I am fat and it is good for me), so I thought watching chess DVDs while exercising would be a good idea.

I don't mind if it needs a computer. I simply don't learn well from books. I am a very visual and audible learner. Dan Hiesman is about as close as I get to a chess author that is useful to me. I am looking for DVDs on endgames, tactics and openings in that order.

hi guys. well i heard mixed reactions on roman's videos. so you should get his best ones, and if you like his style then buy more. roman was karpov's trainer, so his videos that feature karpov's games, techniques or analysis are supposed to be unusually good for dvds. these are roman's karpov vids:

vol 7: how to think and play like a grandmaster

vol 10: positional and tactical masterpieces - part 1

vol 11: positional and tactical masterpieces - part 2

vol 47: most brilliant squeezes in the endgame

vol 55: a tribute to bobby fischer with karpov interview and analysis

if you're looking to brush up on basic chess knowledge, you could do worse than andrew martin's dvds:

vol. 84: Basic Principles

vol. 85: Essential Tactics

vol. 86: Dynamics of Strategy, Creating a Plan

vol. 87: Attack/Defence/Space/time

vol. 88: Endgames Self-Training

there is also a dvd not listed at chesshouse by a maths professor:

danny kopec's "middlegame toolbox for mate"

it's thought to be one of the best instructional videos at 4 hours length. kopec plays through 7 games and 20 positions and they all focus on pawnplay.

i've seen a couple of the foxy videos and roman videos so i'm not just talking empty-headed, lol! i'm also not really good in openings to know much about opening videos tho! Smile

Thanks, good info.  Has Andrew Martin really made at least 88 DVDs?!

slurpz

no, some of the others are part of a bigger series called foxy videos.
