In chess there are 2 types of advantages, static and dynamic. A static advantage is a permanent one that cannot be changed such as a weak outpost square, or a weak pawn structure. A dynamic advantage is a temporary one such as a lead in development. Dynamic advantages need to be capitalized on right away because if you allow your opponent to get it together and improve his position then it will go away.
