White has the inititive, black is the side trying to equalize. White is trying to keep him/her from doing so....
i like c4 and e4,
c4 because you eventually end up throwing all your pawns forward and getting a lot of space with very few exploitable weaknesses if you place your pieces correctly.
and e4, because scotch game is fun.
