Einstein, Buddha, and Elon Musk on Chess as a Waste of Time

Sort:

bit surprised he didn’t develop a brand of cologne and self-title it tbh.

With great great powers comes responsibilities, yes! but does that mean we can not have a little fun? everyone is opinionated, why not? why can't a man speak out what he thinks and feels. At present right and wrong is in a grey area guess what the people of North Korea feels what is right? I don't know! and for sure it will be very much different than mine and until and unless that person tries to change my way of life.

Here comes chess, it is a distraction which I believe is required for me, is it useless? I don't care and how would you know something that you do is useless or not? what you feel for a moment is not something that impacts the world order or the general day to day functions of anyone unless you do something about it.

Musk's is opinionated and so am I, He shows his stupidity while nonchalantly dismissing chess. Not cool Elon. Not cool at all. Chess is a tactical game where both the players are equal with just an exceptions on who starts the game, you can not buy or update your pieces but what you can do is increase your neurons.

Elon has certainly been idiotic about various things.
But a bigger point is that he's gotten away with them whether his idiocy was intentional or not.

And yet the rating ...

Chess, stripped bare of its unwarranted glamour, stands revealed as an empty, self-indulgent pastime. Its allure is an illusion, a mirage in the intellectual desert. The critiques—from both the realms of science and spirituality—leave no room for doubt: chess is not an enriching endeavor. It is, in its totality, an exercise in futility, a grand waste of time.

Brilliant bait. This part I'd like to praise: the reader senses you're so close to the right conclusion, that chess is a game to enjoy and like most enjoyable games is "a waste of time", but you grapple from the edge of critical thought to bring the reader back to disappointment and confusion.

Wow. Do any of them know that you can GET MONEY from chess?

Elon is just some guy born into great wealth who, like countless others before him, made a large amount of cash off family money, yet tries to portray themselves as somehow self-made or singularly special. Take away his privileged start and he probably ends up in a trailer park in a besmudged wife-beater T-shirt, drunkenly yelling at the neighbors barking dog. The people who buy into his grift also bought into SBF's and Elizabeth Holmes' scams or whomever is the next financial genius to appear on the cover of Inc. or Fortune. Some worthy third person from history should be substituted for the smoke-blowing frangible.

The Galaxy is a massively large place, without even considering the Universe. Outside of Earth's atmosphere, everything humans do is a waste of time. It's not even that, being a waste implies other things matter, and nothing humans do matters in the context of the Galaxy--- we humans are impressed so easily.

StandStarter

Chess is a waste of time if you don't enjoy it. If you have free time and you play or do something you enjoy than it shouldn't really be considered a waste of time. Also, chess actually helps you progress through pattern recognition among other things so if you can get really good at chess you may improve your memory and pattern recognition. It's up to the individual at the end of the day, though.

Emperor-Bluto

Musk and Jason McAteer could been more famous as the 2 Muskateers.

Lenin was a keen chess player. Two photos of him exist playing the game in Italy before WW1. The writer Maxim Gorky is in the background during at least one the photos, watching the game in progress, which apparently Lenin lost. Reputedly Lenin stopped playing chess later as he felt it took up too much time.

Chess is a game. Just like every other game/sport out there, it's gonna take a toll on your time if you want to get better at it. That doesn't mean that you MUST spend exhausting hours trying to get better. You could still enjoy it like every other game/sport like every other normal person out there.

Lenin wearing a bowler hat while playing chess with another Bolshevik, a medical doctor named Bogdanov. Gorky watches in the background. Another photo, possibly of a different game, shows Lenin caught in the middle of a yawn, and Gorky looking on amused.

What matters and what doesn't and what is 'good' use of time and what isn't.
That decision goes on 24/7 everywhere.
Chess is many things including freedom from money and money issues.
Which is one of its many great features.
-----------------------
Einstein (science) - Musk (economics).
Science and economics both allowed in the forums.
Buddha (philosophy) also allowed (the other thing not)
Result: Quite a discussion with 300 posts so far including sixty posts this year.

bro, how much cope can you fabricate? even if his family was wealthy you dont go from a few millions to almost half a trillion on daddy's money. Doesnt matter if he is an edgelord , or unlikeable or even a narcissist. The man is clearly brilliant at what he does. This idea he just got incredibly lucky half a dozen times is just asinine.
