Hey everyone. First time poster here. I just got started playing chess about a week ago or so. I've been thinking about buying a electronic chess game. Like one of those little touch games. I already have a smart phone with android, and several chess apps. So is it worth buying a dedicated device? Is there anything Im missing out on?

I guess it helps your learnig. . .

. . . like baseball players do practicing batting

….like soccer players do kicking the ball in a practice session. . .. . .

You could do that or else buy chess software for your computer like Fritz or Chessmaster.

I would say, unless you plan on spending a lot of money for a good one, electronic chess sets aren't worth it. They generally are limited and aren't very strong. As mentioned, chess software is the way to go. You get more bang for your buck, so to speak.

Thanks, I decided to upgrade my membership here. Now I can play live against people on my phone. Plus the tactics trainer and all, I think thats better than a rinky dink lcd chess game :)
