Etiquette on lost games

I was wondering if the Chess.com webmasters have posted any rules, or guidelines on the "etiquette of lost games"...what do I mean by that? Is it useful in a 3 day game for an opponent to play out a hopeless position to checkmate..? In many of my games I have resigned not only because I have judged my position to be hopeless, but also out of respect for my opponents. Recently I see an increasing tendency for players when confronted by "no-brainer" situations to keep playing in the hope of something...zugzwang? It wastes time and motivation particularly when playing an opponent who shoud know better..i.e. someone of the same rank...+/- 1700. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Thanks Fezzik...how do I search the forums..?

I don't care for the results I get from the internal search function, so I find myself googling "chess.com topic" and geting much more useful results.

In the upper right corner of the screen there's a "Search the Forums" text box (below the menu with Play, Lean, Read ..., My Home). Type etiquette in there. It will take you to this link: http://www.chess.com/forum/search.html?keyword=etiquette

Thanks Nick...staring me in the face..so to speak..!! Doesn't resolve my issue however...:-( but I will dutifully proceed with my Queen and Rook against a lone King until checkmate...

I believe it is each person's personal prerogative to complete a game to the fullest.  If they want you to prove the checkmate, you better do it :-)  But do it with a smile on your face, and try to make friends along the way!

If we figure that we will play ~10,000 games in our lifetimes, the chances of saving the draw have to be less than 1/10,000 to resign.

I don't really understand the logic. I don't think that the chances need to be nearly as low to make resignation a reasonable decision.

Heck, there is probably always at least a 1/10,000 chance that your opponent dies of a heart stroke, or gets hit by a car if it's a CC game.

I agree. You should resign, when you have a clealy lost position, especially when its correnspondence chess. The time could be used much more meaningful.

But how to calculate such odds during a game?

He is talking about Correncpondance chess here at chess.com.

Conditional moves can help with the stallers.

If you are willing to play the position from the other side, against Kasparov, for money, it's time to give up.

I forgot my reasoning when this has come up before?  It went something like it's proper to resign right away when:

1) I believe my position is lost and
2) I believe my opponent realizes I'm lost and
3) I believe they will be able to convert the win without trouble.

If you're still new enough you could add 4) I believe I can't learn anything new from watching my opponent win this position.

Otherwise it's rude to play on, yes it's subjective so you can't easily label.  But players know when and what they're doing when playing out, for example, a Q+R+R+B vs lone king game.  Or waiting until the literal last minute before making each move in such a hopeless position.  They're just being a dick because they can.

Eddie Hazel is best known for playing with Funkadelic. He was an amazing guitar player.

I haven't istened to mashups much, but I lke it. The guitar music they retained gives it some of the feel of the original.

I was a rook up on a GM and it would have been his ONLY lost game.  We moved on the average of a move per day.  He delayed the game (2 weeks per move rule) wile he continued to challange other players.

I complaned on the forum and it created a hail storm of controversy and some vile things were said about me.  This was at another chess site.

It would have taken two years to finish the game.  I quit playing two week moves. I quit the game and the site.  I guess he feels he won something, and players who will not resign a lost game ( you know the ones that should resign) think in some immature way that there is some benifit in it really should not feel that winning is all there is in life.

I don't care who he thiks he is, means nothing to me. RevLarry
